Return Of The King

“After all this time, have you learned nothing of the stubbornness of the dwarves?”

That movie was INCREDIBLE!!!!!! I absolutely loved it!! It was incredible, awesome, amazing, stupendous, everything I expected and more!!

Okay, the one thing that did disappoint me a little was Pippin contending with the Palanteer. I mean, I was picturing him in Sauruman’s tower, after Sauruman was thoroughly defeated, slowly circling the thing with the Palantir on it. Hearing Sauron’s voice in his head, and outside his head, and basically talking to it. Not the fiery ball being glued to his hands until Gandalf and Aragorn wake up and get it from him. But Gandalf once again saying, “Fool of a Took!” was a nice touch. And I loved Frodo’s face when he saw that Gandalf was still alive. And how Frodo’s finger looked at the end. That was great.

I expected Shelob to be bigger, though. But the cave was excellently done. I honestly couldn’t say which movie I like best. I do know that I want to watch all three of them now, though. The extended Fellowship and Two Towers, and then go to the theater and see Return of the King.

The shards of Narcil being reforged was great. And then Elrond bringing it to him. And Aragorn’s fight with the dead spirit in the cave in the pass between the mountains. Gimli talking himself into following. “An elf goes underground, and a dwarf hesitates. I’ll never hear the end of it.”

Denethor, though, God, was he a jerk or what? They don’t tell his whole story in the movie, so basically you’re drawing the conclusion that he was a jerk to begin with, and was pushed over the edge after hearing about his favorite son’s death, but still. I mean, he almost burned Faramir alive!!

There’s one definite thing that I like in this movie. There was no definite comic relief person. In Fellowship, it was no-doubt, Pippin. I mean, come on. Pippin: “You need men of intelligence on this sort of mission. Quest. Thing.” Elrond: “Nine companions. You shall be known as the Fellowship of the Ring.” Pippin: “Great. Where we going?”

In the second one, it was Gimli. Like that scene where he’s wearing the chainmail thing, and comes up to Aragorn and Legolas saying that the thing needed to be adjusted. ::He lets it go, and there’s about three feet extra below his feet:: “It’s a bit snug in the chest.”

But in this one, while there are a few comedic lines, usually spoken by Pippin or Gimli, there isn’t any one character that is truly the comic relief. And I liked that, because this one isn’t so much anything to laugh at. It’s more heartwrenching. You’re wondering through the entire movie who will survive, will Frodo make it, will Sam off Gollum before they reach Mount Doom, will Theoden help Gondor even though Gondor would not come to their aid at Helm’s Deep? I’ve never read the books, but may as well have for all I’ve heard about the plot and what happens to the characters, but I was on the edge of my seat for most of the movie, wondering how Frodo would keep making his way, wondering when Merry and Eowyn would face the WitchKing Ringwraith . . .

Some things I didn;t know. Like that Theoden died, that Faramir almost died, twice! I mean, geez. Denethor was insane!!

I loved the end, though. When Frodo left for the undying lands with Gandalf, Bilbo, and the rest. When he looked back at Sam, Merry, and Pippin, he looked like the old Frodo. The one who had been enjoying himself so much at his uncle’s hundred and eleventh birthday party. The one who had no burden to carry. The one who was so innocent, with no care and no major worry on his shoulders. But he had seen, done, and been through too much to stay.

He left his book to Sam to finish the last pages. To complete his story. I was inspired as I watched this movie, just like I was during Fellowship and Tw Towers. One day, I will write a ‘Lord of the Rings.’ One day, I’ll have an epic so large, people fifty years later and beyond will read it, and one day make movies of it, just like they have here. One day . . .

“Well, I’m back.”

–Notes–

Well, good thing I already saw the movie on New Years Eve, because this entry is full of spoilers. 😛 It was a really good movie and I’m planning on watching all 3 again soon. 🙂 [Useful Advice]

Great movie. But I’ll never hear the end of it; I cowered through all of Sam’s Shining Moment. I’m just THAT arachnephobic(sp?). I almost puked on Eric I was so freaked. So he keeps laughing at me. Never read the books?! *gasp!* Kate! Get ye to a library! [HyacatDuncan]
