Zombies

Yes, yes I’m stealing this from 30toSeoul. I read it a few days ago and have been thinking about my answers since, so..

THE STATE OF READINESS OF MY HOME FOR A ZOMBIE ATTACK

Structurally: Excellent. I live in a 1920’s brick building on the third floor. Our outer doors are made of metal and large bolt locks and each apartment has it’s own deadbolt lock too. The windows on the first floor are five or six feet off the ground and most of them have bars too, so, no worries about that. Our building is U-shaped and we have an enclosed courtyard in the middle. The side of the courtyard that doesn’t have apartments is a 20 foot high wall that is connected to the dry cleaning building next door. Some reinforcements to the doors and maybe boarding up a few windows on the bottom floor is all we really need.

Weapons: Poor. I’m really lacking here. I have mace and kitchen knives.

Zombie influx: Medium-Poor. I live downtown Seattle so the closest graveyard is Lakeview (where Brandon and Bruce Lee are buried!) and that’s about three miles from me, on Capitol Hill. Come to think about it though, most of downtown Seattle is an indian burial ground. Hmm. This is so-so.

Initial position: My initial position would probably be my apartment but I could run down the stairs and make it into courtyard and/or laundry room before any zombies made their way in. I think the laundry room would be safest. We have deadbolting doors to get into the basement and then another deadbolting door to get into the laundry room.

Street position: I’m on two main streets in downtown, about three blocks away from I-5 and five or six blocks from hwy 99. I think there would be enough advanced notice though due to the cemetary being a little way away, so I’m not concerned about being on main streets.

Human traffic: There would be a lot of human traffic. I have Queen Anne, First Hill, and Capitol Hill next to me, plus the tourists which all stay downtown (within 4-5 blocks of my building). I think by the time the zombies got to us they would have had their fill of brains.

Other exits: Exits, exits are good. Currently we have people repairing the roof so in the courtyard there is a ladder extending to the roof of the dry cleaner building. Plus there are three main doors to get into the building.

Retreat position: Great. My retreat position would be the laundry room, but if that falls through I’d probably run the two blocks to the federal building, or three blocks to the police station. Both are hugely reinforced.

Escape route: Excellent. Like I said, currently we have a ladder in the courtyard extending to the roof of the dry cleaner building. Say, if I was in the laundry room and they somehow managed to get through the three deadbolt locks and reinforced doors, there is one window in the laundry room large enough to climb out of and I could climb the ladder and get down to the street that way so I could run over the the Federal building.

Defensive base: Very good. It’d have to be the federal or police building, all of the police and other assorted government troops would be good to have.

Acquiring more weapons: Possible. The huge two-story REI is four blocks away, so if we could make it there, we’d be good.

Collecting the troops: Great. My building would band together and become a posse, plus like I said, police and feds are very close by. This would be fairly easy.

Riding it out: This is debatable. If for instance I was in my apartment alone I could probably survive for a few weeks off of the food and water I have stored. Candles, books, and all that jazz too. I don’t know how prepared we would be if stuck in the police station basement though.

GENERAL ZOMBIE READINESS: I’d give myself 8 out of 10. My initial position and defensive base are excellent. The only thing lacking are my initial weapons (i.e. hardly anything) and I would be screwed if Zombies broke into the courtyard and then broke into the laundry room. But other than that, I think I’d have an excellent chance of survival!

Yay! You know, it’s become very apparent that apartment-building dwellers will be much safer than single-structure residents when the zombies come. All that brick and concrete, they’re like fortresses. 🙂
