Babies name changed by judge

While looking around on the Yahoo homepage last eve I came across a news story about a Judge in East Tennessee changes a 7m/o baby boys name AGAINST his parents wishes. This took place in Cocke County in the town of Newport, Tennessee.

I know that area well as I lived in and about the same area for a few years. The whole area is beautiful and the people are just as nice and friendly as can be and if not for the economic situation that developed at the time I would still be there. With that being said and no ill will being meant to anyone in that area or anyone in general, I will get to the reason of this posting.

A judge in Cocke County, Tennessee in his infinite and supposed christain wisdom, WHILE violating a parents right to give THEIR child a name THEY wanted the child to have, changed a 7 months old name to Martin saying that the name the parents gave, which was Messiah, was a title only earned by 1 person and that person was Jesus Christ and that could basically cause problems for the child because of the christain influence in the area. The parents are filing an appeal to the judges orders.

This isn’t the first time that this, a judge ordering a name change, has happened in our country. Just a few years ago, a childs name was ordered changed by a court because the childs parents named him Adolf Hitler. Although the naming of a child Adolf Hitler doesn’t sit to good with most people, not just here but in other parts of the world, the parents right to name THEIR child whatever THEY wish is THEIR right and not the right of the government…..plain and simple.

What’s next???? Are the courts going to order that a mixed race child be 1 color either black, white, latino/hispanic, asian and so on and so forth??? Where do we draw the line??? Why should the religious beliefs of others have an affect on the name that a parent can give THEIR child especially here in what used to be the land of the free???

There are many christain names given to babies every day like Christain, David, Michael and even Jesus’ just to name a few, but nothing is said about that. Who is our government officials/court to say what WE can name OUR kids??? It is completely and utterly preposterous that they have any say so what so ever in a parents rights when it comes to the naming of THEIR OWN child, despite what others groups may say or think about the name.

My birth name is Willaim. For 1 reason or another someone might have a grievance with my name or the name of Samuel, Donna, Frederick and so on but the point being is I as well as others were given our names by our parents despite what others may have thought about it.

Who is to say that the name, Messiah, given by the parents of that eastern Tennessee baby wasn’t fitting??? They wanted a name to sound like the names of their other kids and if that name was Messiah, then who is anyone else to say what is a right or wrong name???

I don’t care what your religious beliefs may be but when it as well as the government and/or judicial system is concerned DOES NOT have no bearing what so ever when it comes to the rights of a parent to name their own child whatever they seem fit nor should it.

I am against this judge’s decision … this court intruded into a private matter regarding the naming of a child …. Messiah … not exactly confusing, and is a beautiful name. Who, in sound mind, thinks a child named ‘Messiah’ is Jesus Christ??? Bizarre.

Now that I think of it, all the names of my brothers and sister are names that are included in the bible. Frustrating what people in “power” do towards people that want to live their life the way they want and now its an issue about naming a child. What about all the names of Jesus, but pronounced different… A parent should be able to name their child whatever they want.
