In 2008, we had the snowiest winter I’ve ever seen here, and I’ve been here since 1987. The city was paralysed, and I couldn’t get out of town to drive south and see the family in SoCal – first time I would have seen my brother in 16 or 18 years. I did drive down and see him and some of the family on New Years Day, 2 yrs ago, and I’m very thankful that it doesn’t look like this at all here this year:
according to my GPS, my parking lot here is 86 feet above sea level
I know that this is like, laughably little snow for a lot of readers, but this was not the usual winter – rain rain rain, no it snowed three times down here in the valley.
The oldest public rose garden in America is here, and we’re The Rose City, yeah, but we’re kinda pansies when it comes to snow.
It snowed and then melted and refroze and snowed some more, and did the same routine twice again, so there was ICE all over the roads, and nothiing could move. It was Dangrous.
it’s funny to me how places like that panic and the entire town shuts down. 🙂

It wasn’t so much the amount of SNOW, but the ICE that was under it. The storms that week were back-to-back with some melting in-between, and the freezing the roads did each night made things pretty treacherous. My normal 20 minute drive to Salem for work was about 45 minutes at 5:30am. Cars were in ditches on both sides of the road. I learned to drive in Denver, so I know SNOW. This was ICE.

Looks like a winter wonderland :). Merry Christmas.

hm… yeah, not much snow, but when you’re not used to it it might as well be a winter hell.

Yeah I remember there being a horrible traffic jam on I-5 and all the side streets around I-5 because the ice ruts got so bad they shut the freeway down. I also remember not being able to measure the snow properly cause the ice layerd in the middle, and the pipe that burst in the vacant unit next door and flooding into our place. YIKES!
