Fifteen years ago tonight:

I had that car, a 1985 Mercury Marquis, just ten days before I wrecked it on the Morrison Bridge here in Portland.
This is the only picture I have of it, courtesy of the Portland Fire Bureau.
My shoulder belt broke and I was flung into the dashboard as the engine came back into the passenger compartment, breaking my left leg and trapping my left ankle in the twisted wreckage. I broke four ribs on the left side and collapsed that lung. I hit my head so hard, they said my brain split into three pieces. Whatever. I was in a coma and kept comatose, and I lost 45 days. I was in the hospitals for 59 days and an Adult Foster Care Home for nine more months. I never have really recovered from the brain injury, but I can live by myself, and take care of myself, and, since I don’t remember anything about it, I can drive and not be afraid.
I won the lottery that night; I did not die, drunk and wrecked and stupid.

My folks had a Mercury Margquis, that behemoth car saved your life. That’s insane to see it as a mangled heap. Whoa.

Wow! Not everyone has life altering events. I’ve had a couple myself. Mine weren’t car accidents, although I think these things make for an interesting life. ~Congratulations~ on just everything!

The car I learned how to drive in was a 1985 Mercury Marquis. I was terrified of it. Rear wheel drive, heavy, it handled poorly, I thought.
