Life Skills Trainer

The girl who I was supposed to meet today’s living situation may be changing, so I didn’t meet her today, but probably will on Friday. I did get to meet the woman who wrote the Individual Service Plans for the two girls I will be working with, and a few questions from her showed that I had read the plans and had thought about my act – how I’d try to follow the plan.

That was a plus; here, we’re working with people who have mental problems and medical problems, so to be flexible and patience are the tools to use here. The all-day First Aid class is on for tomorrow, further building up my skill set. (I did have to qualify for the Red Cross cards when I drove a school bus, and was the first aid man on my repair locker station on the ship I was on, and mom was a nurse – first aid is familiar to me).

From what I heard today, I am in the right place and will be doing the right job, for me. Even more so, I heard that they need men as their LSTs – they don’t have any at the moment, and kids really do need influences from both male and female mentors.

The people the girl lives with, the one I was supposed to meet today, have not been following the ISP that the staff wrote up, and the girl may be moving to another house. Poor kid, moved constantly; she needs a dependable person in her life who doesn’t change when or if she gets moved. My supervisor and the lady who wrote the plans think I can be that dependable person.

So, it’s a slow start, but I believe I’m in the place I’m meant to be, finally.

I’ll certainly continue to keep my fingers crossed that this turns out to be a GREAT job for you. It certainly sounds like you have the mindset and the heart for it. I commend you on that. Me personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for the troubled students in my program. Give me the ones with problems and those are the ones I generally work the best with. Light of heart,

I think you’re in the right place too, Cat. It will be good to see you working at something you are passionate about, and that you obviously have all the right skills for, as well. 🙂
