I said I’ve never been hunting, and that ain’t strictly true….

Here I am, in Washington State, on the Naches Trace, which ran from Yakima to Seattle.  This is near Yakima, in eastern Washington.  The guy in front of me was in a Japanese class that I took at PSU in the early 90’s.

We were hunting rattlesnakes, and I got one.  It’s in the bag I’m holding up.

It was a fun outing, an over-nighter.  Two nights, in fact.  It was probably the last camping trip I’ve made.

The snake?  Killed and skinned him, and he was made into a belt that the guy in front of me never actually gave me,,, but I haven’t heard from him since, so I dunno what happened to the belt…or the skin.

Nowadays, I feel a tinge of guilt for dragging that snake out of the rocks he was hiding in… he wasn’t hurting me, just enjoying the late summer sun.

S’funny how our conscience changes as we grow older, innit? I have been to Yakima! Almost went to school there, but when I asked when they turned on the heat and found out the answer was “after Thanksgiving” and then everyone got excited and threw on their shorts to go to the beach when it warmed up to 60 degrees, I came home.

I am so scared of snakes .. but I know what you mean about a twinge of guilt…. my conscience doesn;t agree with some things I do … and the older I get the stronger my inner do no harm buddhist gets ***HUGS*** as you say onwards and upwards :0) … live and grow :0)

Ryn: Yeh, I got a kick out of it. It’s not the first time though…the first time was the time that I got to write a small article for our local paper. Talk about a huge thing for me. It was a very small town though – we only had a weekly paper. Eh, still it was nice. I hate snakes, and after reading this entry, I know that I’ll go to bed, and sure enough, I’ll dream of one. I hope that your

I leave snakes alone and they leave me alone is my philosophy. Got bit by a rattler on the foot back in my days in the high desert of Oregon, and have an absolute phobia about the buggers now. Actually, even a plain garter snake can send me into a quivering mass of hysteria–totally pathetic! lol! Never been to the Naches Trace–looks beautiful! 🙂

OMG…… that is TOO ironic…. I just had a horrible nightmare about a rattlesnake.

Aw, poor little rattlesnake. Sorry you didn’t get your belt though.

ryn: Excellent..excellent. You are so smart. You completely got my point. I loved your response to it. *smoochies*

Have you ever read “Desert Solitaire” by Edward Abbey. This entry reminded me of the book, because you have such a honest response to animal life. Too few people with that outlook – too much of “kill before it kills you.” I’m sure that belt is on its way to you as I write this! 😛

*shudders* It’s not that I’m averse to snakes. It’s just that I don’t like things that inject poison into me.

Are you not supposed to eat what you kill?

Good. I am glad you feel bad. The rattle snakes here are protected and so rare. People are afraid and kill them. The only good thing is that you actually used the skin. Too bad you don’t have that belt.

i appreciate your changed perspective. i am less black and white about my thoughts about things as i’ve gotten older.

Your friend with the sunglasses is cute!
