Oregon is the tenth largest state in the US, and is relatively sparsley populated.  Here we’re driving up Interstate 5, going north to Portland.  These pics are from the "interesting" part of the trip, south of Eugene where the road goes up and down and around – past Eugene, we’re into the Willamette Valley and I didn’t take any good pics of that area – it’s mostly flat, and although it’s a nice road to see, pictures lack any real drama.

I-5 is the main north-south road in western Oregon, and it runs between California on the south and Washington on the north, 307 miles.  As you can see, there are more trees than houses and more empty roads than people.  North of Eugene, things change.  The Willamette Valley is some of the richest farmland in the US, and most of the state’s population lives in the Valley, in Eugene, Salem, the sate capital, and Portland, the state’s largest city.  I used to live in Kobe, Japan, and Oregon’s total population is about one third of Kobe’s.

There’s room here.

I love that route–drove it many times. Always took along my diet Coke and a small bag of apples for road munchies. I sure miss all that big empty, full of nature, lacking in people, and oh, the smell of those trees. 🙂
