 Crater Lake National Park is one of its kind in Oregon; it is the only national Park in the state.

Crater Lake was formed about 7,000 years ago.  Mt. Mazama was the future state of Oregon’s tallest peak, but it destroyed itself in a series of catacylsmic eruptions, which flung cubic miles of the mountain into the sky.

Cubic miles of material were strewn about the area; to the south of Crater Lake, a couple of canyons were buried in hot ash.  As gases from within the mass of ash rose to the surface, they cemented passages for the gases that, hardened, remained when the ash was washed and blown away, leaving…

The Pinnacles…… very unusual formations. I’m glad you showed us thse pictures. I’d never seen or heard of them before.

Never heard of these before. What are they made of? Just eroded rock? They have the “needles” in the Black Hills of SD that are similar. 🙂
