I surprised myself

Tomorrow night hubby is bringing me with him to his ball game. I have not been to very many of his games because not only does he have to travel close to an hour each way to pick me up and bring me, but when I get there, I end up sitting by myself since he is on the field. Although I have met some of the parents, it has only been a couple of times and I never remember who they are so it was always a case of me just waiting by myself until the game was done. After all, I had no idea what was going on on the field!

But hubby got a video baseball game for Christmas and after seeing him play a few dozen games, I started asking questions about why whatever was happening was happening and what the rules were etc. I found I was actually following the game a bit when he played.

Last Friday he really wanted me to go to his game with him. I told him flat out that I would but only because he wanted me to. We both laughed and he didn’t care, he just wanted me to see at least one game this season, so off I went. I made a big batch of cookies for the team and brought a big thermos of hot chocolate which saved a couple of unsuitably attired fans. They couldn’t believe that I not only had hot chocolate and extra cups, but that I was passing it out to anyone who wanted it. They couldn’t say thank you enough, but they looked so cold, I was grateful I remembered to bring it!

Anyway, a strange thing happened that night. I got dragged off from the spot I picked to sit by the family of one of the players. I really didn’t want to sit with them but I didn’t want to be rude so off I went. I ended up sitting next to not the parent that dragged me over, but her son’s girlfriend! Luckily she is a nice girl, but I would have rathered had an adult conversation. Oh well. But that’s not the strange thing that happened. It was that I was stunned to realize that I knew what was going on on the field! AND I was really getting into it! Yay! lol. I also realized that these people dragged me to a spot that gives a clear view of the pitcher and batter along with first and second base, but the rest of the field is blocked from view by the dugout! It was driving me nuts not knowing if the ball was a foul, or if the ball got caught and made an out. I felt like informing these people that there is a reason no one else sits here!!

So we are off again tomorrow night. I will NOT be dragged off by this family again and will sit where I had first wanted to…with a clear view of the WHOLE field and will have no problem telling these people this. In a nice way of course:) Oh! And the team won the game I went to also. I had never seen them win and was beginning to be thought of as a jinx. Well, no more! So I have surprised myself that I not only understand the basics of the game now and can for the most part follow it, but that I am actually looking forward to going.

Will wonders never cease?

I have gotten into baseball much more since moving to New England – it’s almost a requirement here to know at all times what the Red Sox are doing. My favorite part is “getting to know” the players. It’s sad that actually going to a game is not an option – all games are sold out. But I think we have a good chance at winning the World Series this year!!

My son played all sports available. Since he is grown, I miss getting to go to the games. My granddaughter plays basketball and we go to those, but no baseball or soccer like when my son was little. I learned to enjoy them all once I knew the rules of the game.)

Who’s on first? Glad you’re having fun and hold firm. You can pick your seat but you really shouldn’t let anyone else ; > ) LOL

RYN Thanks so much for your kind notes. She went to the police station to get a car to bring her to her house to get her stuff and her father was there. They would not allow him to take her and so she was taken inside and social services called. They took her. Rachel waited with her inside and all her friends waited for her outside. Poor girl. Were your kids adopted or fostered?

Thanks for your note. I’ll read those entries in the am and note you. Bye.

What? You lived with Red Sox fanatics all your life and you didn’t know all the rules? *thud*
