Inside a Rottweiler’s mouth!

My 16 yr old baby girl, Jasmine:)

Yup, inside her mouth is where I just spent the last hour! Silly me, I went and got my baby girl a special treat of rawhide filled with some kind of chicken stuff, it’s about 8 inches long and maybe and inch in diameter. I gave it to her after our walk and she just went to town on it. I could hear her munching away at it in the other room and it made me smile to know she was staying awake and enjoying herself.

That was, until she came into the computer room where I was and just plopped down and looked at me with her great big brown puppy dog eyes. I cocked my head and just looked at her wondering what she was doing. She had the thing in her mouth with only the very tip of it visible. Ok, I thought, that’s how she’s carrying it around, but why doesn’t she drop it and start munching again?

Then she started trying to do that and I figured out the whole thing was stuck to her teeth! Ok, don’t panic I tell myself even though she was already starting to gag a little. Deep breath, down on my knees in front of her and I start feeling around with my fingers and trying to open her mouth. I know, this is not a smart thing to do with a Rottie and her bone, but there was nothing else to be done. Too early for the vet to be open and I was afraid the ride would make her choke anyway. Dennis was long gone to work, so it was up to me to get that thing unstuck.

So there I am with both hands pushing down on the bone with one and up against her teeth with the other since I had figured out it was one of her top canine teeth imbeded into the end of the bone with the rest of it stuck into her mouth close to gagging her. It wasn’t really budging except for a couple of light cracks which I was afraid was her tooth and not the bone so it made me stop pushing. But then she laid down on her side and started to close her eyes which sent a real rush of adrenaline through me thinking I was going to lose her!

That was it. I banged the floor to make her sit up, which she did immediately, and I stuck my fingers in again and I just pushed for about 2 minutes with everything I could muster but still trying to be careful so that it didn’t come flying off at full force and injure her lower jaw. Quite the balancing act and I was stressing badly, but thank goodness it finally came off! And with no damage to her already fragile teeth! It was the bone that was cracking after all.

What a relief! The bone was loose and it was going in the garbage this instant!!

Yeah, right! Ever try getting a Rottie to let go of food? LOL! We were having quite the tug of war. The damn thing was slimey and I kept losing my grip, at which point she would quickly start chewing and getting her mouth around it and she was definitely NOT giving it up! It really was kinda funny and I couldn’t stop laughing and getting in her face to hug and kiss her she was so cute! And to her credit, she never even growled at me or tried to get away or bite me, she just wasn’t giving up the bone is all! LOL! I really didn’t have any choice but to give in and let her have at it and hope for the best.

Yeah right! The damn thing got stuck again and this time even worse! Wow, I just couldn’t believe that I was back on my knees with my hands in her mouth and this time she was holding on afraid of losing the bone so it was even harder to get the thing off her tooth. She was gagging really bad this time though and I was afraid she was going to vomit and choke on it, so I really went in there and she had to let me. This time when I got it unstuck her mouth was wide open because of her gagging and I grabbed that damn slimey thing and it did go right into the garbage this time and the garbage went outside.

She got me with the puppy dog eyes though so she managed to con an oatmeal cookie out of me and two strips of chicken jerky for dogs. Then she went upstairs for a much needed nap! What a way to start the day!! Sheesh! But she is fine and so is ‘Mom’ with only a minimal amount of frazzling! Yay for both of us! LOL!

I’m glad you managed to get the bone without having to take her to the vets. It sometimes really is a struggle to get them to let go of their treats… Take care,

AWWW, poor pup! Glad she’s okay! Call me a bad mom, but I’ve completely stopped giving my doggies rawhide because they cause such bad breath… :-/

Oh my, I’m glad it all ended well. It’s scarey when our furbabies are in trouble.
