Application of monodisperse silica microspheres

Monodisperse silica microspheres consist primarily of silica and have many silanol functional groups on their surface that can be used for covalent attachment of other ligands. Monodisperse silica microspheres are stable in organic solvents and are soluble in strong bases and hydrofluoric acid. The aqueous dispersion of silica particles has excellent stability. Storage at room temperature is possible without bacterial growth. The granules can be washed with an organic solvent, air dried and autoclaved. A dispersion of silica particles can be frozen.

Monodisperse silica microspheres can be used as a model system for medical, biochemical, colloidal chemistry and aerosol research. There are also important applications in nucleic acid isolation, cell separation, immunization and DNA-based analysis. Monodisperse silica microspheres have a wide range of applications in flexible silane chemistry, low autofluorescence and optical tweezers manipulation. It has a unique refractive index and density and can be used as a particle standard and tracer in environmental science, visualization and measurement of flow in gases and liquids, such as laser Doppler velocimetry, particle dynamics analysis, particle image velocimetry , digital imaging speed and laser speckle speedometer. The high temperature resistance makes them particularly suitable for studying the flow at high temperatures.
