topic MA thesis

In contrast to a previous entry that said I would be doing my MA thesis on metaphors and time and decided to change it around. I tried to do some corpus analysis looking for these metaphors, but that turned out to be completely impractical. This topic should be dealt with experimentally and that’s just not what I want. Instead I switched to metaphor in economic texts, which will enable me to use my knowledge gained from doing my MA in this field. I found an interesting article comparing English to Dutch and I’m going to replicate and improve it by using the latest methodological insights in the field of metaphor research. I will identify problems with metaphor identification and categorisation and I will try to solve them, of course. In the end I hope to find interesting difference between these languages in the use of metaphor in the texts under consideration. I have been lucky enough to get the same supervisor that also advised me on my BA thesis, which means that we already understand how we both work. Furthermore, this will ensure that there won’t be any character clashes or anything. Next week I’m going to hand in my work-plan and have it signed so that I can arrange everything with the exam committee.
