The Ubiquity of Art.

I was taking some pictures outside. (Actually, my original inspiration was to photograph what a mess the van is. I did do that, but found better things to capture.) With a digital camera, you can just spam pictures pretty fast, batteries permitting. I haven’t paid to develop film in years. I’ll glance at the LCD after it processes and access whether what I took was what I intended to take. Then I’ll adjust my angle/distance trying to get it just right.

Taking in the cornicopia of fall with my digital camera, I was reminded of something someone was told me. Digital photography isn’t art. Was it Poptart who said that? Or Cliff? Wouldn’t doubt of both of them said so. I remember some inane argument that had something to do with how film is developed. Or how digital cameras are so high-quality that suddenly its very nature isn’t art.

You know, I’m reminded of how I felt when I was little. I was never into art when I was little. Or rather, I couldn’t draw for beans, so I felt alienated from the art subculture. I didn’t think I was artistic. I was convinced, “Oh, well, you’re into math and stuff.” So I kind of accepted that. But I remind myself of why I shyed away of plenty of other things.

I was taught to believe I wasn’t good enough. That I couldn’t live up to whatever artists were “supposed” to be.

Now wait just a damn minute. (I do a Bones impression in my mind every time I say that, I swear.) I always got this feeling growing up that art was something you either got, understood, and could appreciate, or you’re A FREAKING MORON. Art 1337s are just like math 1337s, I swear. (That’s right, I just said art and math are the same thing.) Thinking they’re special or some shit. It’s like some religion that you just “don’t understand because you aren’t one of us!” Art is as accessible to everybody as math is. It’s just when you analyze it to death, it loses all meaning. I won’t even get into the artistic nature of math.

Due to the crispness of the images, the archived versions are MUCH larger in filesize.

I don’t like people who say digital photography isn’t art, either. It’s just so much more efficient- you can see what you’ve captured straight away, and, if it’s not right, the moment hasn’t passed to retry. Each to his own, as well. Anyway, those are some lovely pictures, particularly the first one, so disregard anyone who tries to tell you what you do isn’t art.

A hundred years ago, painters told photographers with film cameras that it wasn’t art, too. Art is art, regardless of the medium. Having said that, I still can’t see the art in rap music.

I try to do everything I can to help my little preschool kids get the idea that Art can be a lot of different things, and that enjoying the creation of it is the most important part. Pretty pictures. *I* think you’re an Artiste, Timmy. 😉

On a different note, I think it would feel *really weird* to me to live somewhere that the majority of the trees changed colors in the fall.

I enjoyed the ones of the sky, I got a mental feeling of crisp cold air on my tongue. Excellent work!

I was always taught I wasn’t good enough, too. Music Majors are like that, too, sorry to say. I guess it’s a pride factor.

I LOVE the one with your face reflecting in the window, by the way.

If digital photography isn’t art…someone should tell the creaters of photoshop and all the geeks at DeviantART.

Oh my gosh Timmy you update too much for me lately! Aaahh! i just read through your last few posts, just so you know I was here! Sexy pics, both these and the ones of you for Jill awhile back 😉

It actually took me a minute to see the the art in rap music. *smirks* To me, it’s more about “okay…rap music is still out there…which means there’s a segment out there that can truly identify with it…what exactly is it that they’re saying. What’s this life they’re living?” And it’s went from there. Doesn’t mean I’m a die hard fan now, but I’m at least glad that I tried to get it.

Awww. I wish Hawaii had fall changing of leaves. 🙁 We have constant green. And that can be boring at times.

Digital photography is incredibly artsy. Especially digital SLR cameras. They go for around $1000. You can’t say that’s not made for art.

your pictures usually manage to make me smile.i hate that i have no idea how our verbs are actually conjugated and yet i know more than most of the kids in my class. the example that comes to mind most quickly is some boy who didn’t realize that “were” is a form of “to be.” english isn’t taught very well in our schools, i don’t think.(i’ve stopped being a lurker and it’s weird. haha).

Art el337ism irritates the hell out of me. A friend of mine who is an absolutely fantastic artist was made to feel inferior by her ART TEACHERS in school because she drew mostly in the anime style at the time and that, apparently ‘didn’t count’. I shan’t go into the whole art situation at my old school, but it makes me furious to this day. It’s an art college now.

Found you sort of random. I love your pictures 😉 autumn (or fall?) leafs.. I love this season, just because of the colours. Art and maths compared? so true.. Ah.. perfection..

Well damn Timmy, those look like kick ass pictures to me. F*ck the art elite. You should do what you like to do, how you like to do it. I say it’s art.

There is much debate on photography being art. What makes a picture beautiful? Is it the picture itself, or the subject matter? Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm.

I like the second one very much.

Your entry made me think. Awesome you are. Hmm. Nah just kidding. :p But more seriously, I believe art is an human creation that provokes a reponse in from of an emotion : art is not to be understood but felt. If you go back in the time, at the begining of photography you can find people saying that argentic photography wasn’t art. The definition of art is not a constant one (same for beauty —

— for instance) – but well you could probably write a million pages about this – . Then if you are good enough to make even one person think that what you did is art, it most probably is. (just my thoughts).

hah hmm me is going to leave this on private since it might be very dumb. You maybe have noticed it, on the left side of the screen, my location said : France, so yeah. Hmm. I am French, and some of the things you said I didn’t really understood. What does explosive menstruation means? *feels very dumb* *hears someone laughing* Grr!! Hah by the way if you don’t mind, I add you to my favorite.

I like the last two and the fourth to last the most. Paisley…*sighs*. I’m making a paisley skirt on my mannequin Clarissa. I don’t think she appreciates it. Crinolin is her favorite.
