Moondog Coronation Ball

Last night Diane and I went into the city to see a concert. The annual Moondog Coronation Ball.  Great oldies bands that we both love.  – Tommy James and the Shondells, Mary Wilson of the Supremes, The Turtles, Badfinger and the Box Tops.  Below is the Wikopedia entry.

The Moondog Coronation Ball was a concert held at the Cleveland Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on March 21, 1952. It is generally accepted as the first major rock and roll concert.

The concert was organized by Alan Freed, a disc jockey and considered to have coined the term "Rock and Roll" at WJW-Radio, along with Lew Platt, a local concert promoter, and Freed’s sponsors. More tickets were printed than the arena’s actual capacity, in part due to counterfeiting. With an estimated 20,000 individuals trying to crowd into an arena that held slightly more than half that – and worries that a riot might break out as people tried to crowd in – the fire authorities shut down the concert after the first song by Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams ended.

We didn’t have any kind of trouble like at our concert. It was a real trip to see all the Baby Boomers in the crowd. Several got up on stage and danced through several songs. (Wonder what I would say to Justin if his mom did that? He would be so embarrased.)

We got some money for our anniversary from Diane’s dad so we used that and stayed at the Radisson right accross the street from the stadium. We were back in our hotel room before most people were out of the parking garage. : ) It was a nice mini-vacation although Diane didn’t sleep that well.

We got back home at 11:00 and she went to bed while I went for a hike.  Justin is at a Drum Line competition in Columbus and gets home at 9:00 tonight.

A short aside, the other squirrel house is occupied! We now have 2 different ones nesting in our trees.

great that you two kids got into this concert and made a “micro” vacation out of it. I would have liked to hear thses rock’n roll pieces meself. Don’t understand the line: …the fire authorities shut down the concert after the first song by Paul “Hucklebuck” Williams ended. What really happened? Love. Oh, Paul’s FIRST song. Near the end, was it?
