Legally Brunette

So when I got home from work this afternoon, Lori told me that she had seen Steve today and he asked if I would like to be his new legal aid. (Steve is my step-mom’s best friend’s husband who just so happens to be the prosecuting attorney.) I called him at his office and he started explaining to me the nature of the job. I had planned on taking a job at the University this fall under work study, but it only pays minimum wage and although this job may not pay much more, it offers just as much flexibility plus I get to be exposed to a crap load of legal issues. It sounded like fun so I agreed. Steve was like, “Ok, so what are you doing today?” To make a long story short, within 15 minutes I learned that Steve needed a new assistant, I accepted and was changing out of my Logan’s clothes to go down to the office to “learn the ropes”. I spent two hours learning the processes of the circuit court and what forms to fill out and who to take them to. I’ll basically be typing up charges and summons as well as subpoenas and affidavits. I also have to write charges on bad checks and accept payments. I get to spend my days crossing the street between our office, the court house, and the sheriff’s office. I’m really overwhelmed right now, I’m not sure how I’m going to do at all of this, but I’m sure that after a while I’ll get it down. The only thing is the girl whose job I’m talking over is leaving Tuesday, so I only have a few days to “train,” then I’m on my own. But I’m excited, it’s something new that I haven’t done before, and hey, what could be better than free legal advice? Not that I would ever need it or anything, because now I feel a strong sense to stay on the straight and narrow because I don’t think that I could type up my own felony charges…isn’t that illegal or something?

So it kinda works out, since I’ll be at the office Monday – Friday from 8 to 5, I won’t have to work at Logan’s as much, so hopefully that’ll take care of my “burn out-ness”. Plus I now have a job 10 minutes away from my house instead of 45, which is VERY nice.

I have to go to bed now, I can’t remember the last time I had a 2 a.m. entry, and with good reason! I finally feel tired now.
