American Idol: The Boys – As I Heard It.
Ok, a day late but who’s counting?
Michael — Go Your Own Way — Oh, a favorite song of mine. Lindsay Buckingham was very hot, and this guy is no Lindsay Buckingham, is he? I’m trying to figure out why this song isn’t working. Is it too high a key for him? I hadn’t noticed the vibrato in his voice before. I think this is his weakest performance so far — oh, Simon just said that, too. Can someone tell me what went wrong here? Because last week he was seriously channeling Jim Morrison and that was hot.
Jason — I Just Want to Be Your Everything — I like this kid, I really do. There’s something that appeals to me here — maybe a throwback to old hippie days. But I enjoy him. He needed a stronger vocal, but I kind of preferred the song when the band stopped playing and he just sang it alone. Then his voice seemed stronger and more confident. They better not give him the boot this early. He’s also extremely beautiful to look at. Something very genuine and nice about this guy. He reminds me a little of Adam Duritz, without the attitude and way better looking.
Luke — Killer Queen — He’s certainly attractive, but I just don’t like his voice, the pitch of it. At times it was quite nasal, or maybe that was just the tone — I don’t know. I wish I liked this guy because I wouldn’t mind looking at him for a while longer, but he should have gone last week. I totally agreed and said right before Simon did, "When you do a song like this you have to know you’re going to be compared to Freddy Mercury and you’re going to fail." There was and always will be only one, Freddy Mercury. Let’s leave his music alone, ‘K? K!
Robbie — Hot Blooded — I never liked this song, and this performance is falling flat for me. His voice sounds fine, but he wasn’t interesting to watch or listen to this time.
Danny — Superstar — Great song, especially Leon Russell’s version and not the adult contemporary Carpenters’ version. Pitched too low for him — one of my pet peeves. Having a bit of trouble staying on note. I don’t know why he’s doing it so slowly rather than enjoying the song for what it is?
Break time — What on earth has John Travolta done to his hair? Did you notice him on the Academy Awards show? He looks like he has ch-ch-chia hair!!!
David H. — Papa Was a Rolling Stone — Not a favorite song of mine, but well sung. The first strong performance of the night. I really like this guy. IMHO he’s a great cross between John Secada and Mark Anthony.
Jason — Long Train Running — Again, not one of my favorites songs. I think he was ok, but I didn’t enjoy it.
This is kind of a painful night for the guys.
Chikezie — I Believe ??? — I don’t know this song, but he sang it well. The second strong performance of the night. He came through with what I saw glimpses of last week.
David — All Night Long — Another non-favorite of mine. It was very bar band to me. A competent performance.
Baby David — Imagine — Absolutely moving. I sat there and cried like a baby. You think Paula cried? I mastered her and then some. This kid just has it, the whole package. He’s so damned adorable I want to reach right through the screen, grab him and hug him so tight his eyes pop out. I love his shyness and sweetness and I so hope he stays UNAFFECTED. I looked at Brian and said, "When I dreamed of having a little boy? This was what I dreamed of. Not the amazing voice, the sweetness of his being. Brian turned white…as he does when I mention kids. LOL!
Who should go home? Luke definitely. Are two supposed to go again? Then hmmm, maybe Robbie (who I liked last week) or Jason with no dreads?
What did you all think?
