Work it, baby!

When I wrote about what I was going to do when Leah and kids were in Tennessee, I was serious about making a change. Last night, I took that first crutial step in making that change. After work, I went into the gym next door and signed up for the one year program. I’m even going to pay a little extra to have a personal trainer to consult with and guide me towards reaching my goals. I’m not naive enough to assume I can do this all on my own, so I’ll take all the help I can get. I get a serious discount because of where I work, and the fee will be deducted directly from my paycheque so I’ll never have to worry about making payments. So I made the commitment and all I needed to do what make the next step and show up for my first workout.

That occurred this morning. After eating a light breakfast that consisted of a bowl of Rice Crispies, two crumpets and 5 oz of apple juice… I walked down to the gym and checked in for my first workout. The first thing I did was hit the tredmill for twenty minutes, which is the recommended maximum. I didn’t push myself too hard, but I kept the machine up high enough for me to at least be burning a little fat while walking. While I was on the machine I bumped into a friend who was also working out there today.

My good bud Ken, who was first roomie at Univeristy was there for his own workout. I’ve known Ken for over ten years, and he was also my best man at my wedding and is Ethan’s godfather. Ken joined me on the treds and after that he helped me get a good workout in. We spent the better part of the next forty minutes working chest and arms. It was really nice of him to help me out today and I could feel the burn in my arms near the end. After that I worked on the bikes for about ten minutes and then called it a day. I have a beginner’s cardio class booked for 7pm tonight, so I didn’t want to push things too hard.

So that was my first workout. After it was all done, I got a shower in and cleaned up for work. I managed to get all this done and be into the center with 30 minutes to get ready to clock in for the day. So I’ve managed to get that first workout out of the way and finished. I’m a little sore, and my arms are aching but not as much as I thought they would be considering what I did with the machines today. I have the day off tomorrow, but I still plan to come back in and workout again. My plan while the kids and wife are gone is to establish routine and make this a part of my daily regimine. So I feel pretty good, and am hard at work. I’ll feel very interesting after I do tonight’s class and then crash early. I’ll let the DVR take care of tonight’s episode of “The Unit” and I’ll catch some early Zzzz’s for tomorrows workout.

Hope everyone is having a good day and I’ll be around…

Peter

I’ve been using sparkpeople.com to help out with a fitness and nutrition program, it’s pretty cool, and way to go!!

That’s awesome! I hope you have fun. We joined a gym about six weeks ago, and I really love going. It’s the best part of my day.

The hardest part is getting started, which is precisely what I need to do.

Good for yoU! 🙂

I’ve been thinking of joining the YMCA here for a long time. Perhaps I’ll join now and me and you can get fit together. Not to rub it in though, but I only weigh 145 lbs. (Don’t know how many kilos that is to you) So really I would just be adding muscle and actually gaining weight.

At the rate I eat, I’ll be up there with you once my metabolism slows down. My dad weighed 160 when he was my age, these days he’s had blood pressure so high doctors say he should have had a stroke. Last I ever knew of his weight he was about 230.
