Blogathon # 6: New Star Trek movie!
Time Posted: 11:30am EST
I love Star Trek. Yes, you may call me a geek but I love it to pieces. I can blame my Dad for this too cause he is a Trek fan as well. While I’m a huge fan of all things Trek, my brother makes me look like an rookie. Let me put it this way, I don’t have a copy of Hamlet translated into Klingon.
But I am a fan of it so you can guess that I am super, super excited about the new movie, slated to release at a theatre near you Chrismas Day 2008. Co-written and directed by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Mission Impossibe 3), this movie is going to do for Star Trek what Batman Begins did for the caped Cruesader and what Casino Royale did for Agent 007. He’s going to reboot the series and start all over again. A new movie about Kirk, Spock and the whole original series… recast and started from scratch. It’s a ballsy movie, I’ll admit that much, but I think it will work.
Rumors about who will take over the famous roles of Kirk, Spock, Bones and so forth have been running wild ever since they announced the movie. After months of guessing and rumors, one casting has finally been confirmed, check out this pick from Ain’t it cool:
You know the guy on the right, Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock. Standing beside him will be the guy sporting the pointed ears in the new movie. If you think he looks familiar, he would if you watch the television show ‘Heroes’. Zachary Quinto, who played Sylar on Heroes has been confirmed by director J.J. Abrams as the new Spock. Since Sylar kicked the bucket at the end of season one, I guess this was a good step up for Quinto.
Here is some of the rumors going around. They are talking to Matt Damon to take over the Captain’s chair as James T. Kirk. I think this would be an interesting choice if Damon is on board with it. We know from the Bourne movies that he’s capable of doing a good fight here and there. He’s a great actor, so that’s not a problem.
My favorite rumor is Gary Senise for Dr. McCoy. I’m not sure if there is any truth to this, but I think he would make the perfect Bones. Just think of his saying in his rusty voice, “He’s dead, Jim.” Yeah, that would work for me!
Regardless of who gets cast, the most important thing going into a movie is the script. At the Comic Con where the picture above was taken, Nimoy confirmed that he’s read the script, and it’s fantastic. He’s excited about the movie and is so impressed with it that he’s agreed to do a cameo! Yeah, that is sure to get some fans excited. Something to look forward to for next year. Good days are here again for Trek fans!

I agree, Sinise is a great choice! Now we gotta get a girl with great gams to play Uhura. No not Beyonce or Halle Berry !

I’ve never been a big Star Trek fan.

Ahh so it’s been confirmed, I’m looking forward to it, I think he did a great job as Sylar. Here’s a thought, what if Nimoy plays Sarek in the cameo? Only ever seen one episode of CSI: NY but he sure does look like Bones. I wonder who they’ll cast for Uhura, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov. But yeah like Tomahawk says I hope they’re keeping the miniskirts or it just won’t be LegtenantUhura.

I think Sylar is a PERFECT Spock, I was so happy when I read that.

I like Star Trek but love both Stargate series. We’re all in mourning for SG-1 here right now. 🙁 But I did hear that they are going to make a couple of movies, so that’s something to look forward to, I guess.

I LOVE STAR TREK. It’s almost unhealthy how much I love star trek, haha. But no, I don’t have Hamlet in Klingon either, so I suppose u and I are ok? :o) I WOULD LOVE Gary Sinese as Bones. Oh god that would be so great!!! So glad about Quinto, loved him on Heroes. Very talented guy. xoxoxo!

Yay! This is awesome news. I’d vaguely hear something about TOS being redone in a movie, but you just gave me way more info that I had and months before I had any! So much for me paying attention. Odd because I usually pay attention to ComiCon too.
