Blogathon # 12: The future of Soccer Canada

Time Posted: 2:31pm EST

Jonathan was around ten months old when he started to walk. He was around eleven or twelve months old when he started to kick stuff around the house. Didn’t matter if it was a ball, an empty pop bottle or a stuffed toy. If it was on the floor, he was going to kick it all over the place. When we watched him do this, Leah and I had completely different trains of thought. She was thinking “awwww… isn’t that cute!” while the thought going through my mind was “Look out World Cup 2028!”

This first video is of Jonathan showing signs of being a rather good football (aka soccer) player. For a kid that’s only 18 months old, he sure can kick the ball around rather well. Jon really is a natural for his age, to the point where when Jon was at the park kicking a ball around, a parent who was a coach come over and asked us how old he was. I told the guy he’s less than two years old, and the coach responded, “It’s a shame I’ll have to wait so long to get him into a uniform…”

He’s been kicking that ball around the house for a while and he started doing it on his own. Sue me for encouraging him. When I watch this, I see a stiker that Canada’s World Cup team could badly use. Come to think of it, our team badly needs help in many positions. Jonathan is still two years away from being able to play so there’s no telling how well his ball handling will be by then! Watch out English Primereship!
