PT and Walking
I went to physical therapy on Monday and took the strength test that Nancy gave me when I first went in there. Everything checked out better this time. I had, for example, to get up from a chair with no arms, walk a short distance with no stick, return to the chair and sit down and this was to be done as quickly as possible. She started timing me from the moment I stood up and this time this test took me a little longer than ten seconds. When I first started, it took me a little over 30 seconds. I also had exercise time in the pool. I know I did a lot because on Tuesday, I was absolutely worn out physically. That time on Monday was all the therapy I will get this week since the pool is being drained and scrubbed, Nancy told me, on Thursday and Friday. I have appointments for twice a week for next week, though.
So, today I had some errands to do. I drove up the road to get my hair cut and decided to go in without my stick. I tucked in my butt, tightened my muscles there and walked in. Of course, that wasn’t a long distance so I kept on doing this {and leaving the stick in the car} when I went to the drug store and when I went to the grocery store to get a few bits and pieces. By the time I was ready to check out, I was occasionally lurching as I lost focus, but on the whole, I did well. A rather nice thing happened when I was in line. Another register was opened next to the line where I was standing and so I and the person behind me moved over. I noticed the lady behind me had only two items so I asked her if she would like to go before me. She was pleased and in turn, asked me if I would like the Shaw’s bag she was holding! They are selling them for 99 cents to encourage people to not use the plastic bags. She said she didn’t need it and that she had lots of them at home and so I accepted it with pleasure.

That’s a good day! I love it when there are random acts of kindness at the grocery store… probably because I hate grocery shopping so much!

ryn: Merlin is of no help. The mouse was IN his food dish, and J and I heard it. We got up to investigate and I saw the little guy (girl) hiding next to the food bin. Merlin was still in the living room laying on the floor! I’ll be getting some mouse poison tomorrow, which I hate doing but it’s really the only way to be rid of the problem permanently.

Sounds like your threrapy is helping. And how kind of that woman to offer you the Shaws bag. I keep thinking that I am going to buy the Wal Mart ones but then the practical side of me kicks in and says ” But you could make those”. I guess the only way the practical side is going to work though is if I get to doing it!!! Hugs,M

I’m so glad you did better on the test this time! And glad you can do “short trips” without your stick. :o) !! That was nice of the lady to give you the Shaws bag. I love those bags and really should have more of them, cuz they are very useful! hugs, Nicky

Interesting. I wonder how many of our problems are there because of habit. Your staying focused and walking without your stick helps create a new habit in walking. The new habit will help eliminate the problem. Good for you. You’re a hero. Have I mentioned that before?

Isn’t it nice to be able to see how far you’ve come? That’s my favourite part of P/T. The Shaws Shopping Bag? Karma. Cool isn’t it? Loves to you! ~M

ryn: yes, I feel the same way most of the time. Sometimes, though, I just want somebody else to carry the load for a while. Sorry about the pity party. Gotta have one once in a while. 🙂

ryn: It was so strange today, because typically this horse is *so* attentive and listens so well to what I ask of her. Today she just wasn’t in the mood to listen! Thankfully I’m an experienced enough rider that I was able to just ride it out. I can see how an inexperienced rider would’ve been terrified. I was having fantastic fun 😉
