An application AND an interview
Tammy, my Garmin GPS, did not fail me this morning, she took me right to where I needed to go in north Portland.
(long ago familiar grounds -the truck driving training ran around there, and north Portland is where most of the truck terminals are anyway)
I feel good about it all; I got to apply to the bus line company AND got an interview right then and there. As I told the president of the company – a family-owned company, by the way, 34 years old, I can drive anything on this lot. The company runs airport shuttle runs from hotels, charter runs here and there, corporate outings, and school sports teams too. It pays by the hour, not the mile, starting at $13.00 an hour, so all of my time will/would be paid time, and, since they are an ICC Carrier, crossing state lines, they follow Federal rules for drivers. I would be keeping a log book again, like I did in the early 90’s, and would be subject to all the rules that govern Commercial Drivers. They do not push their drivers to disobey the laws of the road – speed limits all the way. Some of those corporate runs go north to Seattle – the driver is paid for all the time it takes, back and forth and however long they need to wait. Tips were mentioned – that’d be new to me – apparently some of those rides, like back and forth to various Indian Casinos can and do see driver’s tips.
I can do this.
I am supposed to hear back by the end of the day tomorrow, but I feel good about it, and am fairly confident that it will work out. A maybe plus – I had to do 3 background investigations for the medical transport job, which I will have to have done again, but I’ve passed every one so far and have been a good boy since the last one, so, in short, not problem. Fingerprints? Also no big deal. Drug tests? I haven’t used any, not even aspirin. No problem there either.
This job would combine two loves – I love to drive and I love to help people ge to where they need to go.
I won’t hold my breath – that’s a good way to fall off my chair as I pass out, but metaphorically, I will. It looks, sounds, and feels good, and I might be back to work this week.
Can I get a "Ya hooo!" please?
