Stonehenge as a frame

A hundred miles east of Portland on the Columbia River, there is a full-size recreation of Stonehenge.  It’s setting is very different than the English original; it sits on desert hills high above the river.

The view through the arches of Sonehenge – either one, I’d think – can be interesting:

Old and New.

Looking eastwards from ‘inside’ Stonehenge one sees the windmills that now dot the Gorge, where the wind is nearly constant.  West of here is the Columbia Gorge National Scenic area and no windmills of any kind will ever be allowed to spoil the views there, but Stonehenge is in Marysville, Washington, and east of the scenic area, where winds are harvested for their energy.  A new kind of forest rises now in the empty lands of eastern Washington and Oregon.

Looking west along the river:

The highway, US 97, crosses between Oregon and Washington below Stonehenge.  On the Oregon side, Interstate 84 contiues east towards (and through) Idaho, and on this, the Washington side, WA 14 runs from Vancouver to I-82 near Umatilla.  97 runs north and south, tying together roads leading… somewhere else.

Looking south from "inside":

Oregon and the Columbia Gorge in the background.

Old and New in another way – I’ve had this car three years now.

There are pictures out there, waiting to be framed and shot.
