Article Encouraging People to be Superficial

Many people are really narrow-minded and superficial, focusing on the unimportant exterior instead of the important interior.  I came across more evidence of it on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 in the form of this upsetting article, Ways Your Appearance Affects Your Paycheck.

We are mostly reminded of how sexist society still is.  Many subjective issues affect women, but not men.  At the same time, there is some racism involved.

It is very unfair how people use exterior appearances to determine results, especially since looks are subjective.  For example, what may look pretty to one person looks ugly to another.  Besides, some aspects of appearance can’t be changed.  For example, we can’t change our height or race.

There are also situations and conditions that prevent people from meeting certain appearances, especially health issues, time, and financial problems.  For example, some people can’t wear certain types of clothing or make-up due to allergies while some don’t have time to put on make-up, which is mostly unhealthy chemicals.  Then many people don’t have money for plastic surgery.  Society doesn’t seem to care about health.

As for posture, they are encouraging people to be rude and arrogant.  Putting our legs on the desk is rude and not allowed in public.  It’s a behavior that often results in punishment.  I understand about having our backs straight, but puffing out our chests is a sign of arrogance.  I do not like people who degrade others.

I don’t know if it will be good for people to read the article or not.  Some people might realize the mistakes in being narrow-minded and superficial, and see how bad the society is.  However, many will probably be encouraged to be more narrow-minded, biased, and superficial, and even rude and arrogant by the section on posture.
