Knightfall (Chapter 1)

“Have mercy upon us. A phrase said much through the previous age of man. First came the third world war. Much suffering was brought upon mankind through their own hands. Or their votes one might say. It was in the last days of the war that the worst came upon us. They were called the hybrids. Military personnel exhausted, scientists turned to a genetic cross between man and animal to fight for them. These hybrids multiplied rapidly and seemed the perfect solider. All seemed to turn toward peace once again. Then disaster. The hybrids became self aware. They turned on their creators. Man seemed close to extinction. Then out of the darkness came the Knights. Humans with extrodinary gifts. Gifts that aided them in combat against an almost unbeatable foe. The Knights were praised for the salvation of man. But they paid a high price for their valor. All but two of the vetrean Knights fell in battle. As the war ended all that remained of the valiant Knight were their apprentices. Many untrained, no longer gentlemen and ladies. Brash and over confident. But mankind praised them for their salvation nonetheless. They turned over their future to these apprentices as they rebuilt. Thus was born the rise of the Red Guard. It is the 20th year since the Knight War and the rise of the Red Guard. Mankind has realized its mistakes, but it is too late. The end draws near of another age, but is it the end of man or the end of all?”
