A Moment In Time

The year is 2006. Donald James Roberts is in grade 7.
It’s early afternoon, about 1:30pm.

It’s a Friday, school is about to end for the day. I’m sitting alone in my classroom. There’s a school dance going on, every student is attending, dancing, singing, having an amazing time listening to all the most modern music. Five minutes in I slipped outside to "Go to the washroom" And am now writing a love note to Jamie Lynn Minnie, the only girl I’ve ever liked up to this point. It’s a poem, scrawled on an old piece of newspaper. After tucking it under her notebooks, I slip on my backpack and make my way through the school towards the front entrace. I bump into Christian, a boy one year younger than myself, on his way to the washroom, and I ask him to tell Jamie I said goodbye.

     "Oh, sure Dj!" he says, and quickly runs back into the gym.

      "Well, I didn’t mean right now…" I trail off, as dissapears.

I’m at the front door now, as I hear soft footsteps behind me. I know it can’t be her, I know it has to be a teacher, or a younger child. But I turn around anyways, expecting to be dissapointed, and…

It’s her.

Jamie Lynn Minnie, staring into my eyes, not saying a word. I drop my bag, I’m speechless. Before I can think of anything, she throws her arms around me, and holds me there. For a couple seconds, my mind is empty. After what felt like forever, I return the hug. I hold her closer than I’ve ever held anyone. There’s tears in my eyes. She’s warm, she smells of strawberries, and she’s closer to me than any person ever has been.
Without a word, she let’s go and steps back. She stares into my eyes again. Those big, beautiful hazel eyes. And then she turns around and runs back into the gym.

All of this happened without a word, she came, we held eachother, and she left. Simple as that.

That was the happiest moment of my life.
