American Idol: Latin Night, Ole! Or Dios Mios.
Melinda — Sway — was fine but nothing special. Well sung, but I think she could have brought more sexiness to her voice if she can’t be sexy physically. While I was listening, I kept thinking "if you do it just a little slower and put some oomph into it, it would be gorgeous". Maybe I’m taking her for granted? She still has beautiful tone.
Lakisha — Conga — picked the wrong song. It’s a novelty at best. Does anyone really like that song? I don’t even think it suited her voice.
Chris — Smooth — great song choice – but then again I am HIGHLY prejudiced here. But Rob Thomas has such a great, strong voice and I always think Chris is a bit tentative. And he might not be, but when I listen to him, I’m always waiting for him to wobble off the note. Maybe he adds too many runs and can’t handle them all? I’m just not sure. Given that, I did like this, especially after the first 30 seconds or so. Then again, is this a song that almost sings itself and gives an added boost no matter what, when compared to something like Conga?
Haley — Turn the Beat Around — Oy! Another novelty song — what are they picking these? Or maybe they weren’t given a lot of choices? Well, let’s see — Haley’s smart to capitalize on those great, long legs — cute outfit to showcase them, too. I especially liked that zebra top. But I couldn’t wait for her to stop singing.
Phil — Maria Maria — Does he go out of his way to annoy me personally? It’s kind of interesting that some people just can’t inject a song with feeling or passion. His runs weren’t good. I hate to say this, but I enjoyed Haley more than I enjoyed this, and I didn’t enjoy Haley at all. I don’t hold his voice cracking against him — they’re probably doing more vocal work than they ever have and need to strengthen their vocal cords. But he bored me — that I hold against him.
Jordin — Rhythm Is Going to Get You — Another crap novelty song. Hmmm, was Gloria Estefan’s entire career built on novelty songs? I didn’t like his performance either but these songs don’t pull me in. The rhythm’s going to get you? Who gives a flying f**k? What Yo factor, Randy? I must have missed the Yo. ;(
Blake — I Need to Know — Finally, a song to sing!! A real non-novelty song. Great choice, and great for him, too. He went from boring me last week, to make me stop and watch last night. Not that it was a fabulous performance, but it stood out from all the other crap. This is great song selection — good for Blake. This is how you win this show. I don’t know about those moves, but he’s got a good voice, he’s reasonably attractive, he’s in the now. He may be the next American Idol.
Sanjaya — Besame Mucho — Besama Nada, more like it. What the hell is his new look? Greasy hair and stubble. He grossed my eyes and ears out tonight. And those stupid sideways glances at the camera when it wheels away — he’s no Suzanna Hoffs, that’s for sure! Did Randy have cotton in his ears? How was that really good? It was so incredibly boring.
So I really only enjoyed Blake and Chris. But face it, yesterday really belonged to Larry Birkhead. 😉
lol at Larry.
