American Idol Review – The Guys – Week 3
Okay, first, once again the guys stole the week. The girls have an awful lot of work to do to catch up to the talent of the guys this year if they don’t want to start getting picked off once we get to final 12.
Okay, now onto my armchair quarterbacking.
Gedeon — When a Man Loves a Woman — Not sure why he had to talk so weird when he was explaining his art, but remember — he’s a teenager. The world’s oldest looking teenager, I might add. Ok, the guy’s voice is smooth and perfect for a Sam Cook style. Okay, it’s no secret I am not a big fan of Gedeon, but I have to be fair here, last night he was flawless… that doesn’t mean I like his facial expressions, but it was a very good performance. Way to go Gedeon!
Chris — Broken — I am not crazy about this song, and was actually disappointed when it was announced he was going to sing it. But he sang it well. Very well. He has a lot of strength, passion and sensitivity in his voice. I’m kind of curious how he would have been on Rockstar: INXS. I’d like him slightly more if he were fronting a band. Yes, Simon is right — the song was a bit of a bore compared to his performance from last week, but man, he’s awesome.
Kevin — Ode to Vincent – I actually kind of like this song, but Kevin doesn’t have the lightness of voice that Don McLean has. It’s not that he was bad, because he actually sang well, but it wasn’t quite right. Nice kid, but so what. He’s adorable, cute, puppy-nice … but I think he belongs in an Irish Choir … go home.
Bucky — ?? (I don’t know the song but hubby did and likes it. Forgot to ask him the title of it.) — I just like Bucky, you know? I don’t know why, but I do. His voice is interesting, but maybe it’s because he’s just so unpretentious. Don’t know the song, but it suited him. He won’t make it all the way, but he’s kind of fun. Hey, Paula just stole my unpretentious comment, hmmmph!
Will — How Sweet It Is — I can’t help but look at him and think Donny Osmond/Peter Brady. How did Donnie Osmond get into this contest? Boring. His best sounding on-key song, but still bland , go home.
Taylor — Taking It to the Streets – As soon as the first note opened I was on the edge of my seat. As soon as
Taylor started singing, I said Yes-Yes-Yes!!! He’s just got it. He does. He’s so talented. He completely loses himself in his performance, time after time and it’s infectious. THAT is the reason for the weird motions and ticks and whoops of joy. Once you understand that you have to love him. Ok, yes, this Michael McDonald song suits him because he sounds almost exactly like Michael McDonald. He brought it home. I don’t need to see anymore, sorry, but this will clearly be the performance of the night.
Elliott — Heaven — His voice sounded good, but I don’t know if I liked him singing this song. His performance last week was stellar, he should stick to that kind of music. Actually, I’d rather like to hear him do a Jason Mraz song. I don’t think this song suited him. And his hair is making me insane. Simon is so right on. His image needs a makeover … wear a beanie… I close my eyes while listening to Gedeon and Elliott … I know that’s terrible to say, but there it is.
Ace — Butterflies — Ok, I hated this. He has a strong falsetto, but there was something weird about it. Yup, I hated it. But I will admit he did a good job with an otherwise difficult song. He annoys me and I know that annoyance colors my ability to be fair in my armchair judging. It’s the schmoopie eyes, I just can’t stand it. He’s a good looking dude to be sure, and he does have a nice voice … for a boy band. All in all, falsetto to natural voice was excellent. Right on again, Simon.
My top 3 for last night:
1. Taylor
2. Chris/Ace (it’s a tie and only because I am factoring in the hunk factor which the audience surely will.)
3. Gedeon (It’s no secret he annoys me but you have to give credit where credit is due, he’s a pompous oddball but he’s a talented pompous oddball.)
Who do I think will get the boot? Will & Kevin
Note: I don’t want Bucky to go home yet, you hear? Bucky stays … the girls have got to love him …
LOL

bucky’s song was “Wave on Wave.” i really didn’t like his cover of it, but the judges seemed to love it. so did everyone else who’s talked about it. chris was okay. ace’s falsetto is amazing. and, as always, TAYLOR ROCKS MY FREAKIN’ SOCKS.

Taylor freaked me out! What the hell was that?! Yeah, not a fan of his. He scares me. And Gedeon…definitely a huge oddball. Too odd for me. Bucky reminds me too much of Bo and I couldn’t stand him so yeah. Elliot creeps me out. Kevin bugs me, and his impediment irriates me. Will…I just don’t like. Chris was amazing and Ace…well we know how I feel about him. Heh. Yummy.

By the way, I agree with you on who’s going home. Kevin was in the bottom 3 last week and I don’t think he did well at all last night and Will just doesn’t have it. He’s not strong enough.
Warning Comment
I figure Will and Kevin might be the ones to go. If I don’t look at the TV, Bucky is good, but I can’t take him seriously. Just like Kevin…

Elliots hair reminds me of Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber.

I think Taylor should sing “space cowboy” and do a harmonica solo in the middle of it. I bet he would JAM! “Some people call me the space cowboy, some call me the gangster of love, some people call me Maurice, because I speak of the pompatouse of love…”

You are always dead on with your observations. I am sooooo with you GF on the schmoopie eyes, but he is no match for Constantine when it comes to schmoopie eyes. I love me some Chris. Damn. I want to lick him all over. Oh…did I say that?????
Warning Comment
Oh…and did you notice a DISTINCT lisp in Kevin’s singing? It was sooooo obvious. He is cute as a little bug though. I bet he is gonna get a girlfriend out of this.
Warning Comment
I like Elliott…he just looks like a garden gnome…bless his heart.

ryn: I’m not exactly sure which thread it was on – but it was the one where I said you had issues. I really thought you’d take it funny and say something funny back.

can’t relate – never got into Idol. The only reality show I really followed was Dancing with the Stars. Whatever shall I watch on Thursday nights now?
