American Idol – The Boys

Here we go!!!

David HernandezIn the Midnight Hour — He can definitely sing, but I didn’t particularly care for this, or maybe I don’t have my AI ears on yet.  His voice sounded good in the intro, he kind of lost it at the end, and the song didn’t sound contemporary enough for me.  I preferred his auditions, so far.

ChikezieMore Today Than Yesterday — Interesting.  This didn’t start off well — too low a key for him?  I didn’t get why he made it this far until he got going, then it sounded really good.  He needs to stay in the higher registers or he’s a goner.  If I had more than a couple of brain cells left, I would remember who his voice reminds me of — Al Green maybe?  Or ?  I didn’t hate him, but didn’t love him.  Oh, Al Jarreau?

DavidHappy Together — Why does everyone  want to start a song slow and then build up?  Just sing the song.  I thought this was a fun choice of song, but his voice isn’t that great — yet it was fun.  He’s comfortable on stage because he’s in a band, so he might be able to pull it off for a while.

JasonMoon River — Boy, that’s a mistake.  Not the way to connect with the world of AI on such an old song, and not right for this show.  If you’re going to do this stuff, you have to be a Clay with perfect pitch.  I hope he doesn’t get the boot right off the bat — that would be very disappointing to his kid.

RobbieOne — Finally.  Now we’ve got a show.  I really like this guy.  He’s natural, good voice, contemporary looking and sounding.  Good job.  Very good job.

DavidShop Around — What’s with these old songs that aren’t relevant now?  Yeah, he sang it well, and yes I like him, but these are throwaway songs to me.  I like this kid singing love songs, softer material.  I like him singing with sincerity.  I guess Simon liked him more than I did — give me contemporary next time and I’ll be suitably impressed.

DannyJailhouse Rock — He had fun, energy.  It’s not a song I like, but he had fun on the stage with it.  It didn’t showcase his voice so we’ll see what happens next week.

LukeEverybody’s Talking at Me — Great song, weak voice.  I didn’t like his auditions either — can’t figure out how he got through.

ColtonSuspicious Minds — I kind of liked this, but would have liked it more if he wasn’t so animated.  This kid bears watching and I think he’ll improve, if he’ll just stop hamming for the camera.  And he should grow some facial hair.

Garrett Breaking Up Is Hard to Do — Check out that Frampton hair.  😉  I liked him, but I think he’s got to learn to project, get some confidence going, and I don’t know if there’s enough time.  But he’s on my short list tonight.  I see potential teen idol.

Jason CastroDaydream — He was a little nervous, but he brought some of himself to the song.  It was kind of fun.  I look forward to seeing what he does next week.  He made me smile.

MichaelLight My Fire — This guy can sing, no question there.  But there’s just a bit of a lack of authenticity for me — too precious in his syllable pronunciation.  60s Rock was an era of abandonment where with him I felt a strong sense of control.  I’d like to see him since drunk or high — maybe he’ll loosen up then.  But he should go a long way on this show — great tone.  (P. S.  I felt like I was watching an audition for the new lead singer of Wild Child.)

Who should go home?  Luke.  Or Jason, but Luke gave the worst performance.

So what did you all think?
