another below feezing day

First of all, the weather here is nothing to REALLY complain about.  I have heat and shelter.  It’s dry.  Very cold… but dry.  I see lots of snow and ice elsewhere.  Cars off the road, power outages, closed highways – elsewhere.

I’m in the best place, if life is all about being in the right place at the right time.  The best place to be in any disaster is… Elsewhere.

The Columbia River is frozen over, as are the falls in the gorge.  It’s on TV – I might not be alone out there.

Looks like it’ll be all of 4 degrees out there tonight.

I will be taking a drive tomorrow. The frozen falls are worth it to see.

***

Classic 911 call today:  a kid stuck his tongue onto a flagpole on a dare – and it froze to the flagpole.  One of the firemen said he’d never seen that in 18 years.  Maybe it’s one of those things that needs an example every few years.

I kind of hope my drunk driving crash will be an example of what not to do.  Don’t drink and drive.

***

Last night, it was 14 at the airport.  The thermometer I have in my apartment doesn’t go low enough to get an outside temp.  The car said it was 18.  Cold, anyway you measure it.

***

This last summer, I got some good shots at Westmoreland Park – tree’s reflections in the Casting Pond, ducks and geese, and a good sunset or two.  Last night as I was driving by, I saw that the Casting Pond is completely frozen over.  Maybe tomorrow before the Gorge, I’ll go to the park.

Or after – I don’t see spending a lot of time out in The Gorge.  That windchill factor gets to me, and the cold is hard on the camera batteries (have to put ’em in the charger now).

***

The worst weather now looks to hit on… Saturday.  Newspaper day/night.

Geez, 18 degrees? That’s COLD! Oooooh, can’t wait to see photos of your trip out to the Gorge!Light of heart,

Eek! My mother’s told me so many horror stories of kids sticking their tongues to flagpoles. I didn’t think it really happened, though! So glad I never tried it!

Wow, 18 degrees. There is a part of me that likes reading your entries about the cold so that I don’t feel so cold myself. It’s gotten down to 50-55 during the evenings and for the San Diego area, that is pretty cold. I’ve been very chilly, but then I keep telling myself that it is much, much colder in other places. I’ll be up in Portland for Christmas, so I’ll be digging out my gloves and hat.
