Drank that coffee – french pressed Columbian – and gathered up $2.75 in fifty cent pieces and a quarter, figuring, well, I’ve got seven paper dollars, so with this I can get a pack of Camel Wides and two gallons of gas.  I thought that walking into the clinic unburdened would be best, so I left my current book at home.  Besides, it’s Maureen Dowd’s collection of her essays since 2000, entitled "Bushworld Enter at your own risk" and I know that it shakes my confidence in humanity in general and Americans in particular and would not make a good passing-time read.

I went naked as it were, with nothing to hide in and hide behind.  Straight, not stoned.

Bought my 2.05 gallons of gas and was pleased to see nearly  a third of a tank there- ah, I can drive! – and drove over to Gateway and found the walk-in clinic.  When they asked why I was there I said "I think I broke my foot".  The receptionist gave me forms to fill out and instructions on how to do that and I sat down and dotted my i’s and crossed my t’s and brought the forms back to the receptionist, who was just about my age or maybe a little older.  I’m there for a hurt foot, not because I’ve lost myself again, so I got a big smile out of her in the conversation and I went to sit down and wait my turn.

About an hour later they called me in and a nurse (Asian!) took the vital stats – blood pressure (110/68, ’bout where it usually is) took my pulse (slow and relaxed) and my tempurature (98.5).  Got a few good smiles from her, too.  She told me to wait for the doctor and left, and I waited some more.

The doctor came in and looked at my foot – sock and shoe off, of course, and decided X-rays were needed, so he told me to wait for the X-ray tech to come get me.  I waited and waited and had just about snoozed out on the exam table when the tech came to get me.  He was an older guy who looked like it was near the end of a long day.  I looked around the X-ray room and saw a poster asking pregnant women to tell the tech and said, "hey bud, just so you know" nodding to the poster "I’m pretty sure I’m not pregnant" and got his smile too.  He finished up and took me back to my exam room and I waited a bit more for the doctor to come in and tell me the results.

Indeed, I broke a bone in my foot.  Fifth meta-tarsal or something.  He reccomended a doc I should go see, a podiatrist out in Gresham, (yup, got eonugh gas for that too) for me to see tomorrow and we were done.  His last words to me were "Don’t blow this off.  It’s a clean break and should heal fine, but without supervision it may be something you live with, and regret the rest of your life".

Four hours after I left home I knew what I thought was true.

So, off to another doc tomorrow.

I am totally broke.  It might be/is/could be depressingly hopeless.

Heh.

It’ll work out, one way or another.

I get what’s left of a week’s pay tomorrow.  I’m not out of coffee.

It could be worse.

that’s the bone my mother broke due to her osteoporosis! (she is 52) !!!!!

June 19, 2006

*hugs* Finished reading the rest of the entry. That’s a crappy bone to break. It heals pretty easily, but can take a while. My mother actually had a cast right up to her knee for 9 weeks but thankfully your doc doesn’t seem to think it’s as serious as that – worse my ma’s foot still hasn’t heeled (get it? hehe). She broke it Jan 6 and went to see a pod again with the x-rays

just the other day (yep 6 months later) and it still isn’t healed. This is because she walked around on it constantly and didn’t rest at all (she went back to work two days later). *hugs* I’m glad yours doesn’t sound as bad as that, but the doc is right – it could get much worse. I’m very glad you still have coffee and the like and I’m praying there’s a shower of money for you, somewhere. *hugs*

Oh dear, that is not good news. I hope you take care of that ASAP.

now you know. hope you get to the foot doctor and get it taken care of soon. i broke a bone in my little toe a few years ago. it took about 6 weeks to heal. i walked on it after the swelling went down. gave me a funny ugly flat shoe to wear while it healed. wasn’t able to drive for about a month. wish it had been the left toe and not the right!! take care,

I’m so glad you went to the doc for information and advice. What has your boss had to say about the whole situation? Is he taking any ownership of the events that led to the accident? Your thunder has some good information on the seriousness of the break. My fingers and toes are crossed hoping that your money problems somehow work out.

Ahh, progress at last!! I am thankful to God for answerting some of my prayers for you! he has gotten you to the doctor safely and will help you to get to the specialist as well.I know he will also provide the money you need to pay for allof this somehow. Please tell your boss that you broke your foot because of the fumes in the van. If that had have been fixed you’d still be okay to work.

He really should have told you not to drive that van until the fume leaks had been fixed. I guess in someway it is is his fault that this has happened to you.He should take some of the responsiblitiy and help you to pay the doctors bills. But I do know that God is still listening, and he will find a way to get some money to you, whether it’s through your boss, or someone else.

Did the nurse give you any crutches? If not you could try an upturned broom with a towel wrapped around the bristles. When I was about eight I stood on a huge peice of broken glass right on the tendon in the arch of my foot. I couldn’t walk and mum didn’t have the money for a doctor so didn’t bother to take me to one–since it wasn’t as important as a broken bone. I had to use an upturned broom

for about a week and half until the cut healed. After that I went back to school and hovelled around as best I could until the tendon healed completely. I can imagine how difficult it has been for you these last few days. But you are a strong person. You are a surviver and you will get through this, just as you got through your car crash and injuries. Just keep looking forwards and the silver ..

lining to this cloud will come shining in!!Then you’ll be well and back on your feet, running and jumping!!

You think you must have been isane? What do you mean?

I’ve only ever broken one bone and that was in my arm – but it does sound like it could be much, much worse, and when things could be worse and aren’t, that’s worth smiling about too.

I have to say that the foot is very complicated that a clean fracture is actually a positive outcome. At 36, while training for a marathon, I fell and broke the bone along the outside of the foot. It took 5 weeks to get a definitive Dx, and by then the problem was worse. 6 years have gone by and the thing still hurts. I now bike. All this to say, I am glad you got it checked out & have a plan.

What a lot of great and supportive notes on your entry here. At least you know, you always have us 🙂

It sounds rinky-dink that your boss isn’t doing something to assist you, considering how the whole event happened. Do take care and see the specialist today – and slow down… I know at times you wonder what’s the point of going on with each day, as grim as it appears to be – but don’t lose heart, or hope.. ~hugs~

I’m glad to see you added your signature ICBW to this entry 🙂 That’s a hurtful little bone to break. I’m glad they’ll monitor it’s healing. I’m curious too, what did your boss say when you hurt yourself? ryn: my twin’s father was murdered when they were almost 7 years old. They got some money from that, also one daughter was in a car accident, she settled on that last month. Take care,

I broke that bone too! I thought the steps were finished, but there were two more to go. 🙂 I had to wear a cast for a while. I’m thinking about you. Take care of yourself!

Reallly, your boss is either negligent or could be sued with contributory negligence. In Australia, anyway. But he’s a nice boss… 🙁

I’m glad you were seen by someone.

June 21, 2006

I strongly suspected it was broken. Glad you had it confirmed by x-ray. Reading on to find out what’s happened since.

June 22, 2006

Good you now know the prognosis. Keep looking after yourself & I hope it heals fast.

July 2, 2006

I’ll share my Kona coffee with you, at any time. 😀 Sorry about the foot… 🙁
