It is a beautiful day
Nice and sunny today, between storms off the Pacific – a sunglasses day.
VocRehab set me up with a job developer, who is working with TJ Maxx stores for Holiday staffing. TJ Maxx is a department store – clothes and shoes and home stuff. It was a surprise a couple of weeks ago when VocRehab called and said "come today if you can" because the job developer was going to be there.
For as little as I prepared, apparently I made a good impression and two days ago, the job developer called and said "meet me at TJ Maxx on Wednesday at 1pm". I got there today at 12:45 only to find that the developer had called; he was going to be half an hour late, which gave me time to look around and to get a feel for the place and the employees.
This is a job evaluation, to see "how I do", and is unpaid for a month
Btw, I should say up front that I start on Monday – back to work!
Unpaid work, yeah, but a regular schedule that may work into a real job.
Ha ha ha. I was the best dressed person in the room – tie, jacket, pearl tie pin, highly polished boots – I looked good.
I was going to take a picture of my job interview self… but since I turned 50 in March, it seems like all my suits and "nice" clothes have shrunk, and my suits do not fit (if I want to sit down) now.
Bummer, dude.
I have a pair of black khakis that I wear all the time now – expanding waistline – and good shirts and ties (I love Goodwill), but I had to wear the sports coat I wore last month for that wedding I went to, a nice Lands End herringbone tweed sport coat. The dress shoes I have are nearly 30 years old – nice Italian style 80’s era men’s shoes, but I wore my nice, polished cowboy boots, and presented, I think, a nice package. The brain injury did not affect my speech, and I have almost fifty years of things I’ve done to talk about and there never seemed to be any doubt I’d get the position.
I start Monday.

Congrats!

Good for you. It’s good to get out in the world – to have a place to go and something to do. This should turn into a paid position. Good luck.

I didn’t want today to end – then the sun went down and now its purplish blue sky outside here in downtown Vancouver.

My friend got hired at the new TJ Maxx downtown Portland before it opened – its downstairs from an office store, a lot of people don’t know about it yet.

Congratulations! A whole month of unpaid work? Is that allowed? That’s a long time to use someone and not pay them. Seems unfair. However, if it gets you a “paid” job at the end of it, then, it’s better than waiting around for days to pass until something comes along. All the best! G~

Two thumbs up!!!!

that is wonderful about the job!—-is it like an internship and that is why you won’t get paid? We have a student interning for us right now. Hope this turns into a paying job for you.

doesn’t surprise me about you being the best dressed person. I am amazed what people wear showing up for Court appearances much less for a job. But then again, i’m old–58.
