Blogathon # 10: Mr. Prime Minister
Time Posted: 1:31pm EST
Time to attack another question, this one comes from thesunnyabyss:
If you were Prime Minister what changes would you make for our great Country?
This is a fantastic question. If I was the Prime Minister of Canada, here are a few things that I would do as soon as possible in no particular order:
1) Respect the Kyoto accords:
Our nation made a commitment to lower our share of pollution, and we signed it, so to back out is not setting the right example. I’d bitch slap a lot of the companies not getting their emmissions back in line with heavy fines, and keep fining their ass until they either fall in line or pay off the national debt… which ever comes first.
2) Banking reform:
Right now now we have too few banks milking Canadians out of a crapload of money with what I think are illegal user fees. What I would do is pass a law that would reform the entire system since the Banks cannot be trusted to regulate themselves. I would bring an end to double dip fees for cash withdrawls, and also limit future mergers and allow for more foriegn competition. All of these would be benefitial for the consumer who has been taking it from the Banks for far, far too long.
3) Tell George where to put his missile defence program:
There’s a lot of things I’d like to tell George if I was the PM… but one thing I would quickly gun down is Canada’s support of missile defence. As of right now… not a single missle has hit it’s target. Zero. Ziltch. Nadda. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a money pit that is never, ever going to work. Until he starts firing some tests that actually hit their target, I feel no obligation to dump money into a program that doesn’t work. Show me some results George, and then we’ll talk. Until then, I’m not going to spend healthcare, social service money on that crap.
4. Free pass to those to protest the war:
I would give amnesty to anyone who deserts the army or dodges any drafts. As long as they didn’t commit any crimes before leaving, they would get full access and not be turned down at the border. Right now there are a lot of stories coming out of soldiers being ordered to do things in contradiction of the Geneva Conventions. If this is true, and soldier do not want that blood on their hands, they are free to come to Canada under refugee status.
5. Crack down on private medicare:
Right now some provinces are allowing private clinics to open in defiance of the Health Care Act. Right now the current PM is sitting on his hands cause most of his support comes from that province. This is not a road Canada wants to go down, and I would shut them down immedately, and prosecute anyone who defies laws that are on the books. If you don’t like them, take it to the supremes and try to overturn it. Outright defiance of a law should not be accepted nor tolerated. One thing I might also attack is prices for prescription drugs. I’d warn the pharmicudical companies to not charge more than 500% profit or I’ll legislate price freezes.
6. Legalize Pot:
I’m not a supporter of pot. I’ve never used it and I likely never will, but that’s my personal choice. But there are people who like it and if tabacco and alcohol are still legal, this isn’t much of a stretch. The reason why I support legalizing pot is that I think police resources would be better off going towards the enforcement of harder drugs such as cocaine, herion, legal pills, etc. Right now our polices are stretched thin, and this would aid them to a great deal and the fact that Holland’s GDP Tripled in half a decade has nothing to do with this idea… 🙂
7. Freeze Gas Prices:
This would be a big one, and highly challenged. But I would appoint a special branch of government that oversees the price of Gas. We would freeze prices, and any hikes or drops in price would have to be approved by goverment. Our panel will only approve a hike if they provide a good reason for it and evidence to support it, like if oil prices go up and that crap. But if there is no logical reason, then their request would be denied. This will eliminate gas gouging at the pumps and the many companies trying to milk clients cause we all know they fix the prices. Will be interesting to see how they like it when we fix their prices… I doubt they would.
That’s just a small taste of what I would do if I was the PM. But since I don’t see that happening anytime soon, we can keep dreaming.

If I were Canadian, I’d certainly vote for you on the broadbase of your policies. Not too sure about the cannibis one though.

I wish your PM would do something along the lines of number 4. What has just killed me lately is going into the mall around 3-4pm and seeing the recruiters surrounding all entrances… trying to get kids just out of school to sign up. Also, they have started advertising inside the movie theatres. I’m very against this. Getting kids when they’re pissed at the parents, desperate to get away from hm
