Ethan and the Greyhounds…

Yesterday (Sunday) was really fun and I think Ethan enjoyed it as well. Early that morning, I had to go out to the grocery store to pick up a few items for supper. Since I promised Leah a chance to sleep in, I took Ethan with me so we could enjoy a little time together. I love taking Ethan to the grocery store, cause he sits in the cart and makes funny noises while playing with a few of the items I’ve tossed into the cart. It’s all good fun, so I took him down. First thing we did though was buy something for breakfast since it was only 10am. Ethan and I split a breakfast plate which consisted of eggs (scrambled), fried bolonga and toast. Ethan and I ate our fair share, and after that went to get the grub to take home.

On the way back, I saw a large banner posted up on the door of the community center that was around the corner from our building. Turns out they were holding a huge picnic to raise money for Greyhound adpotion. There was going to be a BBQ (Hotdogs and hamburgers) as well as silent auctions to raise money and tons of dogs to look at and pet. Since it was a clear and sunny day, seemed like a good thing to do. First thing we did was take the groceries back to the house. At this point Leah informed me that the keyboard was toast. Turns out she had spilt a full cup of coffee on it, rendering it useless. Well, I told Leah… then Ethan and I had plans so I tossed her my card and after putting the groceries away took off with Ethan to hang out with a few dogs.

When Ethan and I arrived, it was a lot of fun. They had silent auctions, and while i never won a thing it was fun to just make a few half assed bids. They were serving hotdogs and drinks, and Ethan happily ate a few timbits while shunning the hotdogs cause they were not high enough quality for his liking. But the best part was when I let Ethan run around the soccer field behind the community center, which is where they had all the greyhounds. There had to be thirty of them, at least! And I really do think Greyhounds are simply georgious animals, and It was fun to watch Ethan approach the dogs and he was actually quite gentle with them as well. He was really shy around the dogs as well sometimes when the came up to take a sniff. He would back a way a little and giggle when the dogs came up with their long snouts and giggle even more whan the gave him a big wet kiss.

Overall, it was a lot of fun, and it truly made my week to have this moment to share with Ethan. There were a lot of other kids there his age as well, but many of them seemed to scared to approach the dogs. Ethan was shy, but he did quite well at least approaching them and smoothing their backs. Leah is a little paranoid about dogs, and Greyhounds have a bad rap… so she was relieved to see we had both come home without a scratch. Whatever, I said to her. The only thing stopping me from actually adpoting one is the fact that we’re living in an appartment building. That’s not a nice place to raise that kind of dog, but if I had a house… I would have taken them all home. I know Ethan would have loved it… he seems to really like dogs a lot. We’ll have to get him one when we eventually get a house.

The coolest thing about it was that I managed to get my hands on a disposable camera before we went over. So I got pictures of it all. I’ll be sure to post some here when I evetually get them developed. I can’t make any promises to when that will happen. I haven’t even gotten the chance to develop all the pics from the Nashville so I make no promises. But when I get them done, I’ll post a few of the cutest ones here… promise!

Actually, retired racers do well in small dwellings since they do not bark and spend 90% of their day sleeping or at least laying around… they are extremely cat-like 🙂 I adopted one, but sadly she went after my cat so she is now living in the country with another grey and a whippet and doing faboo *whee*Glad Ethan enjoyed them!

An apartment would be fine for an ex-racer – they rarely move from the couch! Greyhounds are also great for biulding kid’s confidence in dogs as they are slow and gentle around them, my cross bred one lays down when she sees small kids so they can reach her easier!

Awwwwwww I bet that was a sight to watch. That’s great that he isn’t too scared of animals. That’s neat that they had that auction, trying to get the greyhounds homes. So many of them are put out when they get too old to race. It’s very sad! Okay so where are the latest pics of Ethan? Which entry? I wanna see the lil devil! Jamie

hah! i have never heard anyone say greyhounds have a bad rap! i’ve had 5 over the years, my last was just put down a couple months ago at 13. they are definitely loungers, they’re very lazy and love to sleep and cuddle and they’re very gentle and good with kids. i definitely recommend them for pets. 🙂
