Going to Church tomorrow
No, you didn’t read that title wrong, I’m going to church tomorrow night. Now before everyone get their panties in a bunch, there’s an interesting story to go along with that.
Over the weekend, two friends who are married that both work at the center were talking about a function that is taking place on Wednesday. Apparently their particular church celebrate the last supper once a year before Easter as opposed to every Sunday like other denominations. I hadn’t really heard about this before, but found it rather facinating. I’ve studied religious studies, and thought it would be interesting.
So when they invited me to join them at the Church, my other friends who were at the table in the cafeteria were a little stunned. They thought it was rather rude to invite an Atheist to a religious function, but at the same time they were eager to hear me to turn them down flat and make some quibby remark since I’m a non-believer. Didn’t happen. While I do not believe in organized religion, I have tried my best to respect the rights of others and their right to worship. For that reason, and the fact that I got nothing to do tomorrow, I accepted their invitation.
The look on my friend’s faces was priceless, but in the end they understood but found it funny none the less. I found the event to be interesting and wanted to check it out. Regardless of what I think, I think it will be nice to show a little support to friends and get out of the house and miggle with people as opposed to watching television and playing on the P2 all night. Yes, I’m getting that desperate for social interaction…
Yet at the same time, I’ve witnessed other religions display their own way of memorializing the last supper, and would like to see how this one differs from all the rest. I’m curious to see if the one year annual event is any more different or if it’s just another same old same old with the sheep. There’s only one way to find out… so I’ll hang out and see what all the hoopla is about.
To my fellow non-believing readers, fear not. I have not a single intention of converting to any known religion. So short of God him/her/it/them making a grand appearance and asking for my undying obedience, nothing is going to change as far as my status on religion. I’m going to hang out with a few friends, observe a different religion and their ‘unique’ memorial of something everyone else does differently… and see what happens. If anything, it will be at least educational from a social anthropologicial point of view.
One of my friends made a joke later on that day, asking if he could have my Playstation 2 if I spontaniously combust after I walk in. I laughed and said yes, he could. After all, the odds of that happening are greater than winning any state lotto. Speaking of that, I gotta pick up my lotto ticket before tomorrow night’s draw. Now there’s something to pray for, eh? I would if I thought it would make any difference, but know better to even suggest it. I’m not there to moch the Church, merely observe and show a little support for friends, it’s also something to do and hopefully they’ll be something munch on. After all, this is about a last supper, right?
So those are my plans for tomorrow night. If anything it should be interesting. I’ll do my best to keep my comments and laughs to myself until I get home. If anything… it will produce a rather amusing entry for everyone to read when I get back. So until then, everyone take care and I’ll be back tomorrow to post a follow up. That is… if I don’t spontaniously combust.

You should really surprise them by talking about the Gospel of Judas. My mom got her panties in a twist when I talked about it to her today. She quickly told me that the documentary I was about to watch on it was going to try to get me to believe a bunch of lies.

Sounds like it’ll be interesting. I love exploring religious things. It fascinates me.

i like attending religious functions with friends sometimes, as long as they aren’t really evangelistic.

so wait, technically you mean if you win the lottery, you will convert 😉

“They thought it was rather rude to invite an Atheist to a religious function,” hehe Actually, your description of the church meeting does sound familiar, if it were a regular Sunday meeting instead of what it was.
