Pre-Episode III entry…

Tongiht, as in this evening… I am going to see the midnight screening of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. I can hardly wait. I am excited to get in line because I am going to hang out with friends, catch a movie and have a night out. I’m going to meet up with some friends at the mall, around ten to twelve hours before the movie starts and get in line early. I know it sounds geeky, but my neck isn’t meant to watch a movie from a certain angle and getting stuck with a corner seat doesn’t sound very pleasent at all. I want to be in the center row, center seat… and I’m willing to use up a significant amount of my day off to get it. Since there will be friends there with me, that should make the time fly right by. I’ll take snacks, a deck of cards, games and a good book with me and it should take no time at all to wait for our midnight screening to open.

It won’t be the first time that I’ve hit the lines to get a good seat, I’m just glad the old dark days of two lines is over. Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s before you could get tickets at the machines, you had to get in a huge line just to get tickets… and then after you got tickets, you had to get into another line to get a good seat. So sometimes when I hit the big theatre in downtown Hamilton I used to see two lines, each with 500 people in them, and I knew that night that I was watching nothing. The only way around that was to go with a friend and tackle both lines at the same time. One person would get in line for tickets and the other would get in the line for good seats, and by splitting up the duties, you could sometimes get around the lines and get into the theatre and actually see the film.

Now those dark days are over, thanks to automated machines and advance ticket sales. Now that we can get tickets as much as three weeks in advance, all we have to do now is get into one line for good seats so you don’t have to break your neck to see the film. So looking back at that horror, tomorrow’s wait for good seats is nothing and I can do that in my sleep. So I’ll take a book I’ve been trying to finish for a while and a discman, just incase the guys bail and chicken out… but it shouldn’t be a problem. If they don’t chicken out, we might his a bar and have a few beers afterward and talk about the movie.

I’ll be showing up at the mall around twelve noon, which should be early enough to be the first in line. If not, then whoever is deserves to be cause they’re more dedicated than I. But then again, the real geeks are the guys in Seattle who got in line in January! Five months is a long time to wait in line, and that guy must have more money than he knows what to do with. The funny thing is, as a friend once pointed out to me the last time I went to a midnight screening is that because of timezones… our screening is the first ‘public’ showing of the movie in North America. By the time Toronto or New York starts to roll the previews, we’ll be 90 minutes into the movie and already into the film big time. By the time that guy who waited five months in Seattle is starting to watch his screening, I’ll already be finished, home and half way through my review. So the idea of being the first in line for the first ‘public’ screening of the movie kicks ass. But just the fact that I get to hang out with friends should be fun, and since I have the day after the movie off as well I’ll be able to sleep in once I’ve finished and mailed my review in.

Well, I’ve got to get Ethan ready for daycare, everyone have a great day and I’ll be around… not! I’ll be in line. Have a good one.

Wait, you have to stand in line to get good seats? Like, inside the theater itself?

I’m totally envious!! I wish I could go tonight at midnight. I’ve done the whole get there early and stand in line to get good seats before…back in 97 when the movies were all re-released. If that makes us geeks, so be it 😉 I’m looking forward to your review!
