HISTORIC JUNEAU GOLD MINE TOUR

Relive Juneau’s mining heritage on this tour of the remains of what was once the world’s largest producing gold mill. Constructed in 1913, the Alaska Gastineau Mill was designed to crush and recover gold from 6,000 tons of rock per day. After a short ride to the site of the mill ruins, follow the path of the ore to the railroad superintendent’s house. Here, enjoy a display of different mining techniques, equipment and the view of Gastineau Channel below. Venture underground into the conveyer tunnel through which crushed ore was transported to the mill below. Don a hard hat and proceed along a boardwalk into the 360-foot long tunnel carved into the mountainside. Inside, experienced miners will demonstrate mining equipment and give you a feel for the mining lifestyle. Wander among displays, the ruins and the gift shop and take time to pan for gold. Your driver will bring you up to date on the mining industry’s current role in Juneau as you return to town.

MENDENHALL GLACIER HELICOPTER TOUR

That will be me next to this chopper soon!!

John Muir described Mendenhall Glacier as “one of the most beautiful of all coastal glaciers.” Take a helicopter ride to this world-famous glacier, for a rare opportunity to set foot on this massive river of ice.

Your modern, turbine helicopter soars over alpine ridges to Mendenhall Glacier. Cruise above twisted ice spires and deep crevasses that dominate the lower glacier. Gaining altitude, pass Mendenhall Towers — rock sentinels that rise 3,000 feet out of the glacier — and spectacular ice falls where the Juneau Icefield overflows to form Mendenhall Glacier. Set down on and explore the glacier’s surface with an expert guide. Learn how glaciers form, flow and then shape the landscape. On the return flight to Juneau, you’re treated to the unforgettable sight of Mendenhall Glacier stretching out toward the sea.

Thank God This outing is in the beginning of our cruise. If you weigh more than 245lbs you have to pay a chunk more of money. I made Eddie weigh himself tonight…his weight is 253lbs. He tells me not to worry because he will stop drinking his mochas in the morning. –this will be interesting. Maybe my low weight will counter balance his high weight?

Great Excursions! ryn: The camera is working again. For some reason the rechargeables that we’ve always used are no longer working in the camera. Non-rechargeable turn it on. Who knows!?!! I posted pics of the remodel a couple of entries ago.

I hate when vacations become how much one weighs…
