Skirts
I’m going to the Palace of Gold in northern West Virginia next weekend. I’ve been before and now my sister-in-law and her husband want to go. We decided to join and do a family trip because, well, he had an absolutely terrible bereavement in January and realized family matters. (I’ll get there at some point.)
Last time I went I felt very welcomed, but almost everyone else there was from India and the ladies wore sari’s (or sarees, I’m not sure.) There were residential women who weren’t from India, definitely from the US, and also wore them. (By residential I mean these women were devotees that lived on the property.)
The residents wore more pale or natural colored garments. I’m thinking it’s because it’s just their everyday attire, the guest were more colorful.
I felt a little out of place in my tank top and jean shorts so I thought maybe I could dress for the occasion. I looked up sarees and the colors to see if it was appropriate for me to wear .
The Internet says that it’s okay for me to wear because it’s a sanctuary and it’s the common garb. I’d be wearing it out of respect and as someone trying to understand more, not as a costume. But how would anyone else really know that? What if the think I’m playing dress up?
Well, I did more research, a little anyway… My research was on A mazon and had to do with prices. You know what I mean.
My favorite color is coral so I looked for a cheap one in that color. I found one for like twenty five bucks. Then I learned that the color can have meaning. Coral is my favorite color so that’s what I chose.
The package came and the color was lovely and the material was light and airy. I was sweating like a popsicle last time so that seemed wonderful. I learned that it’s basically a large piece of fabric or shawl and that it it can be tied several ways.
The different ways of tying have different meaning or purposes.
I’m on such a tangent that I’m forgetting my point here….
I said fuck the saree, I think I could just wear a boho type skirt made from the cute and lightweight scarves I’ve collected over the years. And then I told my sister-in-law about it. She loved the idea.
Neither of us are particularly girly. We don’t wear makeup often. She braids her hair and I put mine into a bun. According to the Internet we might be psychopaths. BUT we are both DIYers that like making and growing things.
Now I’m making two different skirts that need to be finished in a week. I’ve never made a skirt before. What if they fall apart and we’re naked in a sacred place?
We will have on shorts. I’ve at least covered that base.
I went to pee and now I’ve lost my train of thought, so until next time I guess.
