Bookmarks and Friends Sorting
You may have already noticed this – but it’s something fairly small. On the Bookmarks and Friends pages, the way the pages is sorted has changed. Instead of the links that used to appear in the upper right of the page, the column headers are now clickable – and will allow you to sort the list by any of the columns that you can click. In addition, the sort now works either ascending or descending, whereas before you could only sort each column in one direction.
I’ve also added a new sort to the Bookmarks list – you can now sort them by last visit – so you can see them in order of your visits to their diaries.
I’m working on changing the sort links throughout the site to this same mechanism – using clickable column headers instead of links. This has already been done on the member index pages, and the member search pages. There’s also a slight change to how the member index works – you can still select members by groups of first letter of their name or age group, but you can also sort the results within that selection.
Finally, one last thing (and this actually happened a few days ago) – I’ve added a geographic index which can be found on the "read diaries" menu. This page shows you members by U.S. state or country.
The DiaryMaster
I had a whole set of stuff I wanted to say over here, but it’s almost midnight, and too much King of the Hill and Family Guy while working have driven the highly lucid statement on 21st-century socio-cultural relations right out of my head.
Oh well.
I don’t think the world is a lesser place for its loss.
socio-cultural relations? Really? Call me silly but I’d rather hear about the cats…lol.
Warning Comment
I have the same problem forming a coherent thought after long bouts of mind-numbing television. Ugh.
Warning Comment
If I might make suggestion- the member index is clunky. Sorting by first letter is fine, but being able to drill the search further by including a second letter (or even a third) wuld vastly reduce search time. i.e.- instead of searching all of the “A” diaries, an “Ab” or even an “Abc” search would be far more specific. Thanks for the recent flurry of improvements! BTW- does theautomatic logout feature we used to have no longer work? I’m back to having to manually logout once again when I leave OD. I really liked that feature. I thought that perhaps it was one of those unintended consequences of some other improvement, but it’s been several months now since it last worked for me.

I don’t watch King of the Hill but I love Family Guy. Do you watch The Big Bang Theory? Since you describe yourself as a computer geek I can see you liking the show. Have you noticed that when you sort your note history by person that you can only see a set number of notes? Meaning if the note you’re looking for from that person isn’t on the first page there’s no link to take you to the next page of notes from that person. You just have to keep looking through all of your notes and hope you find it. It’s a bit of a pain when you have thousands of notes. If you could look at that I’d be very happy. I hope you have a good day & thanks for the update & the changes.
Warning Comment
how are your cats? thanks for the changes. you’re always working to improve the site. take care,
Warning Comment
Always, you write that highly lucid comment first then give us the technical stuff. 🙂 Thanks…….
Warning Comment
Ah yes… I am familiar with how King of the Hill and Family Guy can drive one into a deep lucidity. I’ll look forward to when you reember it 😀
Warning Comment
That’s really awesome! Only trouble – I sort my bookmarks & then go back and its back to the regular updated first to last list.. also.. in my groups, diaries aren’t in the list by date.. they are just all mixed up – no rhyme or reason.. Somethings you’re still working on? Thank you though, for the grouping option!!
Warning Comment
Hi there, just wondering if there was any way you could make the diary notes have more characters? They’re too small!
Warning Comment
Neat 🙂 Thanks 🙂

If I had a dime for every time the King of the Hill and Family Guy hours on Adult Swim had derailed an OD entry… I’d be quite rich. lol Glad to see I’m not the only one though! 🙂
Warning Comment
don’t you ever rest? smiles P
Warning Comment
Family Guy will do that to you.

Why did you remove the login block from the sidebar of the diary pages. If I’m browsing around, and visit a diary when not signed in, I have to go to login tab, different screen, log in, try and find diary I was visiting and start all over. so complicated when it used to be so simple. ????? what happened?
Warning Comment
So, we can no longer use the s-word? Really? I mean, I get that you don’t want obscene language on here, but the s word? Sigh.

Overall, I’ve been very happy with OD’s changes. The one thing I can’t stand: the ad at the top of the home page. It has a ‘rollover to expand’ feature, but it won’t contract again after you roll off! As a paid member, it’s annoying as all get-out but, of course, the site doesn’t know I’m paid because it’s on the login page. Basically, I hit that stupid ad every time I open OD, and it’s annoying.I mean, really. If an ad annoys me, I’m LESS likely to click it, you know? Other than that, you’re doing a great job with all the changes, upgrades, improvements, and maintenance! Thanks, DM!

You are such a geek…I mean that in the nicest way possible 😉

The new censorship is rather amusing; are we not trusted to police ourselves? If proper writing and word usage is that big a concern, I recommend an editor for the front page. That “anyways” bothers me a lot more than any profanity might.
Warning Comment
Why haven’t you mentioned the new note censorship? I think people should be informed.
Warning Comment
I discovered (by reading someone else’s notes, not by any notes I left myself) that notes are now being censored? And it’s more words than just the f-bomb? When did that happen? I really dislike this feature, but more than that, I’m not happy with the fact that it seems like this was done quietly, with no warning or announcement. Personally, both of those things bother me, a lot.
Warning Comment
I second the comment about the note censorship.
Warning Comment
Thanks. Good deal.
Warning Comment
Sorry to bother, Im new here. I read the entry in which you talk about mdd, im an ex-mdd… do you have any idea if there’s any way in which i can take back all i’ve written in mdd?. Or is that completely lost? =(. Thanks. xoxo
Warning Comment
The obscene language thing … how about having it as an option for people that don’t want it displayed in notes?
Warning Comment
I definitely don’t like the language filtered notes. Can you make that an option? Thanks.
Warning Comment
[james ensor] and [the fourth son] are right. why don’t you mention the note censorship? perhaps explain the justification for it.
Warning Comment
You forgot to mention the asterisks.
Warning Comment
Hopping on the “boo censorship” train. One suggestion I saw was implementing an option for people to filter notes on their own diary, turned on by default for new diaries, turned off by default for existing diaries. Choice is always better.
Warning Comment
i’m hugely disapointed with the new note censoring and the lack of notice about it here in your diary. i’ve read several explanations from various admins on a few diaries, but each explanation was pretty hollow in my opinion. some people don’t want swearing in their note sections? who decides what a swear word is then? and you can be just as offensive without swear words as you can with them. why not make it an option? i want people to be able to express themselves OPENly in my OPEN Diary. i don’t want them filtered, asterisked or otherwise censored. What makes those who want censorship more important than me? This is all just hugely disapointing.
Warning Comment
Hi Bruce, please come by my diary and read my latest entry about censorship on OD. Your response to it would be deeply appreciated. Those of you here protesting ODs new word bans can throw in your lot against censorship by joining the “Pro-Swearing” interest.
Warning Comment
Yes, please get rid of that ridiculous high-school Tipper Gore censorship malarkey. What’s really irritating is that it doesn’t even recognize when those particular letters are used in words that aren’t “offensive”. Not that I think any one of the administrators should have the ability to decide what people can or cannot leave in response to my entries on my diary. I believe that should bemy choice and part of the understand I have with my readership. It’s ridiculous that this administration has taken these steps, especially since it’s extremely easy to flaunt them and, also, that the asterisk-ing clearly indicates the intent and the meaning of the note anyway. Anyone who is offended is going to be offended even when they are blanked. These are just words, Bruce. Carlin showed us that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFmRypAYz_E

You’re being a dunce, Bruce. A clod. A staggering fool. A silly fop. A jerkface of the highest order. Give us our freedom of speech back!!!!! This is OPEN diary, is it not? Why not rename it CENSORPAGES?
Warning Comment
Please consider what so many have suggested: a censorship toggle we can hit for ourselves. That way, people who don’t want to have swear words in their notes can have them starred out, and those of us who don’t mind can let our friends express themselves. At least consider it, please.

First, I am not pro-censorship. I enjoy my freedom of speech. However, there is a time and place for everything. And there are many young children here, who do not need to be exposed to our crudeness. They get enough of that at school. However, to put it in perspective, nearly all sites allowing posting filter out some language. On Huffington Post, you can’t even use id.i.ot even though there aremany in our political system. Perhaps you could allow us to choose what age groups can read us. Then allow us to turn note filters on or off. I know, more work, but then the crude can be as crude as they enjoy.Be well.

We have free speech again?! Thank you! I appreciate having the choice to use whichever words I feel are appropriate, for both my notes and my diary.
