Scott Bone Marrow Donor
Woke up early today (6:00) after staying up til 11 watiching TV. Got on my bike and went for a 2 hour ride before it got too hot. I threw the bike in the car and was about to head to the path and then I changed my mind. Why waste the gas? I would consume about a gallon just getting there and back. It was early enough that the car traffic was light so the risk of getting hit was low. I kept picturing a whole gallon of highly refined fuel. I can run my lawn mower all season on that. Maybe if people pictured the quantity of gas they used and saw everything that goes into making it (including the drilling) they might start to think differently.
We took the cats to get their shots but they changed the dates at Petsmart. The vet is next week. Bummer. I had to grab Tigger by the hind legs and hang her upside down then grab her head and stuff her into the carrier. She was hissing and screaming the whole time. The other 2 cats went in without any problem.
Then we went to the pool for a quick swim. Weather is about 90 again. Hot and sunny.
My brother Scott called. He signed up to be a bone marrow donor. Something he did last year and now they have a possible match. He called because he needs someone to accompany him while he donates. I told him that I would. I am really proud that he is doing this. He’s really maturing. The procedure will happen on July 12 in Washington. We’ll fly there the day before and then he’ll have the procedure the next day. They need us to stay another day to make sure there is no problem then we fly back on Friday. I would like to get back sooner. I think they are being extremely cautious. We’ll see. My SIL Debbie was the recipient of bone marrow when she was battling cancer. Unfortunately she didn’t survive. She did well for slightly over a year then quickly relapsed and was gone. She was only 41 years old and was a terrific person.
Now we’re getting ready to throw some veggie burgers on the grill. The Cavs are on TV at 8:00 so that’s where I’ll be.
Namaste
thats an awesome thing for him to do. i just signed up a while back, myself. and i like your point about gas. it makes a lot of sense.

I don’t know who the Cavs are (caught you on the front page), but it’s nice to meet a same-age writer, and a bone-marrow doner at that. Inspiring to hear about your biking, too. I’m getting over a cancer surgery, then complications which followed when the surgical site ruptured. Am hoping to be back to work in the fall (teaching) and on my bike! So … in many ways, this was a fun read. Thx!

a two hour bike ride early in the morning sure sounds like a fun thing to do. if we all were bone marrow donors, we’d have fewer people die who need it. hope your team wins! take care,

Has he been thoroughly briefed on what is involved in being a bone marrow donor?

I figured it out the other day. For every 5 miles I drive it cost me $1. Unfortunatly we live in a very rural area. The closest town to me is 6 miles, and it’s not very flat. If I lived closer I would walk or bike. But there is no way I’m making my 14 mile treck to work at 10:30 at night on a bike.

Washington, OH?

ryn: I asked because there are a lot of risks associated with being a marrow donor, and the procedure is quite painful. Best to go in with eyes open.

Maybe things will change and you can go with Scott afterall.
