off to see the wizard!
Even though I’ve got a digital now, it still takes me forever to post pictures. But, at last I’ve got them on the fantastic flickr, and I’m ready to lead a virtual tour through the Land of Oz! If you’re on dial up, better go make a cup of tea or a cake or something and come back in a few hours.
Greeted by Dorothy and a pretend Toto who actually looks kind of realistic in that basket. I think Dorothy’s smile looks a little frozen because she IS frozen. It was very very cold. And foggy. At least it wasn’t snowing, as it has been known to do on Oz Day. It’s also not unheard of to have snow on Saturday and then have a gorgeous 75 degree day on Sunday. Not this year – we didn’t go back Sunday since we went twice Saturday, but Sunday was even colder and foggier.
Ms Gulch and… I don’t know what the other one is supposed to be. I just thought it was kind of amusing.
Inside Dorothy’s house, pre-tornado.
Auntie Em all smiley in the kitchen. She’s happy because it was about 50 degrees warmer inside the house than it was outside. And we’re about to go down into the cellar and get scared, and the small children are already screaming!
Of course you can’t tell a single thing about the cellar from these pictures, where it was very dark and there are little blacklight scenes painted on the walls of the witch on her broomstick and men in rowboats and some just kind of random and haphazard flowers designs and stuff, and a black and white film going in a loop on one wall with men in rowboats and the twister and the house and Mrs. Gulch flying by on her bicycle – but we all know how I LOVE swirly lights, so pretend you’re going through the cellar and seeing swirly lights and screaming right along with the terrified children!
You can at least KIND of see the blacklight paint witch here.
I don’t know what on earth this is supposed to be, but it’s quite groovy and swirly. LSD in Oz!!
After the tornado!
Everything’s all sideways after the tornado, like Mystery Hill. However, Baker B IS exaggerating the effect just a bit here.
Met by the coroner at the door! Who looked unnervingly familiar. And he’s not the REAL one, who actually used to come sign autographs every year. Now he’s in his 90s and in too poor health to travel.
GASP!!!! The house fell on a WITCH!!!! I thought the sign was hilarious – I don’t know if it was intentional, but it wasn’t there first time or second time we went through.
Well, since we’re about to hit the Yellow Brick Road and I am about to be in big trouble if I don’t get back to work, I’ll leave the next part of the tour for tomorrow.
looks like it was a wonderful visit. i can imagine it was a fun place to be. you took some great photos! i really liked the green ball with the red on it! can hardly wait to see the rest of the tour tomorrow. take care,

It looks like so much fun. Do they change it every year?

Yippee! I love it that you go every year. My favorite is the blue blacklight witch. Coolarama. I like the modern baseboard heater next to the fireplace too, and the mystery person…I think that is the lion in jeans.

Me again, just sitting here wondering just how close I was to you when I was in Knoxville this summer. Do NOT tell me it was only a few hours away. I was looking at the scenery in some of your beautiful pix and thinking, man that looks just like where Vic lives….and then my heart sunk. Just tell me it was like at least a days drive okay? *L*

ryn:How fascinating and cool that you had that entry! I agree with your former self too now that I think about it. There was some room for character development later that just didn’t happen and she went off on these kind of strange but predictable tangents after one accepts the original premise. I sort of am thinking of it as a disappointing episode of Six Feet Under.
