flooding pics

This past March 13-14 time frame my town and the area south of me had major flooding. I live on the boarder of South Dakota and Nebraska. A big river separates the 2 states (Missouri River). There’s a dam just outside of my town (Gavin’s Point Dam). We live by a little creek. It flooded over….like a lot.

This first pic is the only pic I have of the creek….at a normal level (taken in Dec 2017)

Below, the creek during the flooding. The 2 pics were taken in the exact same spot (notice the bridge in the background? top pic has the zoom on).

The city gave every resident garbage and recycling cans. Many people along the creek got their garbage cans washed away. All the above pics are just of the creek

Now this pic is the dam. This was the runoff…..before more water was released! At one point there was so much water, the water was flowing above the gates. At the peak, the water being released was 100,000 cubic feet a second (Google says this is equivalent to 2831.6 cubic meters a second)

This is the aftermath of the creek flooding. This is a trail close to our house. I love walking on this trail. The trail is a city long trail. I love it cause I feel I’m in nature, middle of nowhere, while still being in the city. I take the dogs on the trail too. Now the entire trail is blocked off, no trespassing signs

Of course, Nebraska has gotten more flooding. Niobrara, Nebraska is about a 40 minute drive from me. There was a lot of flooding there. Well, a lot of flooding in northeaster Nebraska, eastern Nebraska in general.

Now that’s a lot of water.  Bummer that you can no longer walk along the city trail.  I’m glad there weren’t any homes damaged.  I live in California and we’ve had so much rain this winter.  It’s been a surprise to all of us.  I sure wish the rain would have arrived when we were experiencing fires.  Great photos you’ve taken!

@wildrose_2 Some houses were damaged….well, there are some houses close to this creek (not really shown in the pics) and the basements were damaged.

Damn nature, you scary. Interesting photos, it’s astonishing what can happen with a bit of extra rainfall. I hope your house was OK.

Wowza!! Incredible pics!!  I have a sweet gentleman friend whom lives in Ft. Pierre, SD. He lives in a trailer home. He is 3 trailers from the Bad River!! It didn’t flood this year, but, a few years ago, it was awful!!
