American Idol Review – The Guys

Okay, I am going to try and be as fair as I can here.  (Vote for Taylor.)

All right, here we go!
 
First, I’d like to point out something interesting about the Girls.  It has been mentioned that Paris has opened for Bow Wow, and Lisa played Nala in The Lion King Los Angeles production.  So they’re used to being up there in front of an audience — they’re already professionals.  But that means the playing field is not exactly even. 
 
Ok, now the boys —
 
Patrick – "Come to My Window" – Excellent song, but not exactly a home run, although he can definitely sing.  Pitchy here and there.  This song is deceptively difficult to sing, and needs a big, powerful voice like Melissa E. to carry it.  It was ok.  By the way, I loved the clip of his audition, singing "If" — Very nice.
 
David – "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" – Gee, hmmm, first — this isn’t a giant step away from crooning.  It’s still not what I would call current.  It just didn’t do it for me.  Yes, he can sing, but who cares.  This is the boy that every mother would love her daughter to bring home, but this isn’t the right contest for him.
 
— By the way, I don’t like the dog pound or the kitty pound making their stupid comments and yowls — it’s really annoying.
 
— Their advice to stick with what you do best — half way through the show, they want variety, they want them to stretch.  So then what? 
 
Bucky – "Simple Man" – A bit pitchy, but I actually liked his voice.  Not his speaking voice, but I find his singing voice interesting.  I’d like to see him stick around for a while.  He won’t be the American Idol, but I enjoyed him.
 
Will (who I thought was the crooner???) – "I Want You Back" – He did well, but I didn’t care.  He’s adorable and I want to wrap him up and mother him.  But Idol?  Nah…not based on his performance last night.
 
Sway – "Reasons" – Nervous?  His falsetto was weak, and he was really pitchy.  Again, he’s singing a song that means something to him, whether he can sing it or not.  Maybe if he calms down next week, he’ll be better?  Maybe?  Randy and Paula must have been listening to a different Sway than I was because he was simply awful!  Yes, he can hit some of the key notes, but it was pretty messy.  Simon is so on-target tonight with all his comments.
 
Chris — "Wanted: Dead or Alive" – Finally!  He sounded great and picked the perfect song for himself.  It’s good to see someone who knows themselves well enough to pick something they can actually sing.  So far, the performance of the night.  I want to hear a lot more from him.  And the clip of "The First Cut Is the Deepest" was great, too.  Could it be that I like him better than many of the girls?  Hmmmmmm.
 
Kevin – "One Last Cry" – The first note was odd, but he seemed to get more comfortable.  Kind of pitchy here and there, but his voice has a very nice tone.  I also think he’s completely adorable.  Woman will love him and want to see him do well.  He appeals to the mother in all of us. 
 
Gideon – "Shout" – Well sung, but his energy level didn’t quite seem consistent with the song.  It was kind of a 50s performance, but it sort of worked.  I agree with Simon about his smile — itannoyed me, too.  In fact, I’m sorry, but he annoys me.  He’s cocky and arrogant and it shows in his singing.  Leave your cock at home buddy and get back to me.  (I also think he’s a wee bit scary looking in that "joker" kind of way…just something about him bothers me and his talent in my opinion isn’t enough to make me overlook that.)
 
Elliott – "If You Really Love Me" – His look kind of bothers me, but he has a good voice.  Good performance.  I don’t agree with Simon that he is potentially the best male they’ve ever had, but I liked him.  But is he appealing???  He makes some creepy faces.
 
Bobby – "Copa Cabana" – No!  No, no, no, no, no!!!!!  Why oh why did he sing that?  10 points for having fun on stage, but I don’t need to see him next week.
 
Ace – "Father Figure" – I gotta tell you, before he opened his mouth I wanted to dislike him soley on his schmoopie faces.  But I’ve got to be honest here.  He sure knows how to deliver a song, doesn’t he?  Very good.  Oh no, no, no — I see Schmoopy Constantine potential.  Too late.  BAH!!!!  He’s a Schmoopie eyed lady killer.  Hubby was laughing his butt off at me last night because I was hollering at him on screen.

 
"Nooooo, for the love of God!!!  NO Ace, not the schmoopie eyes!!!"
 
"Aww rats, I knew it.  He’s a schmoopie eyed Constantine wannabe."
 
"Noooooo please don’t encourage him with the schmoopie eyes?!?!?!"
 
"Oh for the love of all that’s holy, they are encouraging him…."

Now, to be fair, I have to admit, I was moved.  I was so moved I caught myself making out with Miko — lucky for me he hasn’t been eating any poo lately. (*LOL*) By the way, he sounded like crap in his audition singing "Emotion."  Hey, shades of Vinnie Barbarino?  By the way, Simon nailed it yet again — two others have better voices, but he relates to the audience in a more intimate way. 

Taylor – "Levon" – I LOVE this guy, I haven’t made any secret about it.  I get a total kick out him.  I don’t think it was a great performance, but it was a good one.  But what do you do with this guy, with his odd mannerisms, his funny haircut.  The gray doesn’t bother me, but his cut does.  Hollywood will fix that though.  He’s got to get the country twang out of his singing voice.  And I don’t know if I exactly get original out of him — yes, he can do Joe Cocker and Ray Charles and everything else Randy said, but does that just make him a good mimic?  I don’t know yet, but so far I really love him.  He makes me smile.  You know, I just listened to him again and I liked him even more.  He’s growing on me more and more, day by day. 
 
I so wonder what Paula and Randy were listening to most of the night.  Paula has started slurring again.  They were definitely on a different channel than I was.
 
Whew, I can’t believe we made it through 4 hours of AI already — I need a rest.
 
Who should go?  I think these will be the bottom five:  Will – Kevin – Bobby – Sway – then David.
