Entertainment Shortcomings

I don’t know how Christina and I got to talking about the 1987 movie “Mannequin”, but when the song, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” by Starship just happened to come on my Spotify, I felt compelled to send her a YouTube link of that very song.  I don’t know why.  I just did.  It isn’t as though we talk about movies all the time.  Actually, we don’t even talk about music all that often, but here we are.  A movie.  Its title song.  Next thing I know, I’m sending her a song link.  I’ve always liked the song anyway, so it didn’t kill me to search for it and send it to her.

I keep thinking that this is one of those movies that would absolutely suck if it were to be made or remade today.  Mannequin featured a gay black man in the movie, named Hollywood Montrose, played by the late Meshach Taylor (04/11/47 – 06/28/14), who absolutely nailed the role and made the movie that much more enjoyable.  Today, this movie would be criticized for having just the one gay man instead of a whole slew of gay or even transgender characters.  I have to think that there’d be a segment of the population who would raise a stink because the main character, Jonathan Switcher, is romantically involved with a mannequin.  That’s just how messed up this world has become, but I don’t want to delve into that in this entry.  All in all, Mannequin is a cute movie and as far as humor goes, it has its moments.

I was watching some video on YouTube, as I typically do during the workday.  The song above happens to come on at the end of the video and it made my ears hurt.  This song, like most music today, is trash.  The good thing about this song right here is that it’s just over three minutes long, so the misery it causes doesn’t go on much longer than it ought to.  It’s because of bad music like this that I can no longer listen to the local radio, except for the stations that play music that was released before 2000.

Jay recently had the chance to play DOOM: The Dark Ages for PC.  His verdict?

Doom is all right.  Don’t think its worth $70.

And in one fell swoop, he unknowingly just saved me $70.  As I mentioned before in a previous entry, I’ve never been a big fan of DOOM and that new release was not on my radar.  Jay’s assessment there does not offend me, nor does it bother me.  I now have $70 to spend elsewhere or I suppose I could be responsible and pay a bill with that money.

Movies, music, gaming…all three entities have fallen off to some degree.  This is why I seek comfort in the movies, music, and games of old.  There’s a certain charm in the entertainment of yesteryear.  As I get older, I will likely stray further from all things current because movies, music, and games today are just terrible.

At this point, Ms. Pac-Man has much more charm that a lot of the games that are coming out today.
