Music of the Night

. . . I saw Phantom of the Opera . . .

. . . .

I don’t know what to say, I’ve even given myself a day to think. One would think that as much as I love the play, the story, the music, that I would have a great deal to write about, But every time I think about it, I close my eyes and I go back. I can hear the music that I know by heart, I can hear the words echo in my mind. . . and I’m lost again, disappearing into the music.

In the theatre, I very quietly quoted the opening before the Ovature – word for word, there was very little variation from the original play. And then the music started. The way it was filmed, listening to the overture that I know so well, watching the Opera Populaire come to life, I found myself almost crying. It had been over ten years since I have seen the chandler raise above the stage, since I first heard “The Music of the Night” . . .

I not only saw Phantom of the Opera, I felt it. When music captures your mind and soul so completely, there are no words for how it makes you feel, for the simply fact that real emotion cannot be put into words that others can understand.

Music of the Night
~Phantom~

Night-time sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses . . .

Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it – tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day,
turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light –
and listen to the music of the night . . .

Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams!
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before!
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar!
And you’ll live as you’ve never lived before . . .

Softly, deftly, music shall surround you
Feel it, hear it, closing in around you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind,
in this darkness which you know you cannot fight –
the darkness of the music of the night . . .

Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world!
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before!
Let your soul take you where you long to be!
Only then can you belong to me . . .

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication!
Touch me, trust me savour each sensation!
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
to the power of the music that I write –
the power of the music of the night . . .

. . .You alone can make my song take flight –
help me make the music of the night . . .
