Placement of the Stars

Placement of the Stars

The morning mist drifted on an idle quest through the ancient forest, as if exploring for some great unknown hidden within. The vibrant colors of the stars above slowly and honourably bowed out, their brilliant light no match for the coming dawn. The nocturnal creatures that ruled in the darkness took their leave as their roles were reversed by the diurnal animals of the light.

A solitary figure stood at the tree line before an open meadow cloaked in the fleeing shadows around him. His long, dark hair hung freely across his broad powerful shoulders as his piercing green eyes watched the horizon keenly. He could see the crimson glow behind the imposing heights of the regal mountains beyond and knew his wait was almost over.

The Lord of the Night’s bare muscular chest rose and fell quickly as his breathing increased as anticipation consumed him as it always did. Even the Gods were fraught with the blight of patience.

The first lustrous spear of light surmounted the absurd distant instantaneously, caressing the long dew laden grasses with its warming brilliance. In the span of a single breath she was standing within the center of that affectionate caress with all the elegance of her stature, the Lady of Light. Her ivory dress shimmered within the light as it enveloped the flawless curves of her body.

His feet denied his decorum with their eagerness and he swiftly cleared the distance stopping only shy of the radiance surrounding her. Her intense, russet gaze entangled with his in a prevailing longing of the purest kind. She stepped closer to meet him between the border of light and dark, her long auburn hair slipping gracefully down her slender shoulders.

He placed his hands as close as he dared risk to the barrier of light engulfing her, her own hands reached up to silhouette his, weary of the dim shadows beyond. As one they stepped closer their hands entangling together defying the natural order of things. A convulsion of luminosity and opaqueness ruptured from their surroundings in a vivid mosaic twisting the very fabric of what nature intended. Opposing everything they stood for they pressed in closer, their lips parting in an affair of forbidden passion.

He wrapped his arms around her pulling her in tightly ignoring the agony such a bold act caused him due to his design. He would suffer a thousand times worse to feel her body against his if even for a moment.

His lips trailed her soft cheek down her slender neck drawing pleasurable gasps with each one. He cupped her face within his hands and was about to draw her into his embrace once more when several lances of light cascaded over the mountains stabbing through the shadows of his world. He cried out staggering back as the darkness of his realm was forced back into the depth of the ancient forest.

She reached out for him as he was driven back while the glory of her dawn swept across the face of the earth. Tears streaked down her smooth cheeks knowing her realm of existence caused him such agony. Her hand extended past the restrictions of her dominion and into the obscurity. She brushed her fingertips across his jaw line, the effulgent of her skin tarnishing as the tenebrous of his confined asylum consumed her.

He placed a gentle kiss upon her palm and pushed it free not being able to stand to see the afflictions his world placed upon her. But she was unrelenting to his compassion and stepped further into his world refusing to leave his side again. Centuries of this emotional dance was more then she could bear.

His eyes widened in frightful panic as the light of her existence paled as his darkness fought to devour her. Without thought for his own preservation he pulled her into the illumination of day.

They both collapsed into the depths of lofty grass in an exhausted, conquered embrace. With the last of their will and strength their lips meet in a lover’s farewell.

The moon crept across the sun and enshrouded the great orb in an overpowering darkness leaving only a vivid ring of brilliance to prove it still remained. The emblem of night slowly relented to the symbol of day leaving all as it should have been for forever more.

The meadow laid barren now, two immortal beings denying the fates they were cast, for better or worse…
