Natural Date Order
I said the other day that I had been holding onto a few other developments while I was working the last month on improving site performance. I’m glad to roll out another one of those today – it’s actually something OD used to have, back in the day, but that had been discontinued a couple years ago for system-related reasons.
What I’m talking about is displaying your diary in its natural date order, rather than being able to only see your diary in the physical order that entries have been placed into it. In other words, before today, if I posted an entry in my diary and dated it December 25th, 2008 – it would still appear as the most recent entry when I looked at the table of contents for my diary.
That has now been changed back to how it was originally in OD – now, if I put that entry in, rather than showing as the top entry in my table of contents, it will appear back in 2008 where it belongs. Please note, and this is important – that no matter what date you put on an entry when you first write it, it will still show up to your friends as your newest entry when they look at you in their bookmarks. This is as it should be, because your newest (meaning most recently written, not by date) entry is the one that your friends should see and visit.
This also means that if you go back to an existing entry, and change the date on it, it will move to its proper place in your diary – which is nice. But on the other hand, if you change the date of an existing older entry to today’s date, it’s not going to show up as your latest entry on people’s bookmarks. For pure semantics, this is the way your diary should operate – you will now be able to go back in time, and insert entries from previous dates if you wish.
In addition to being nice to have, this is an important first step in implementing some of the other things I have been working on, including a utility to merge diaries together, and also a new import facility (that will include the ability to import an old TeenOpenDiary, if you had one of those back in the dark ages – and you remember the login information).
The DiaryMaster
I had typed a bunch of text over here, about the significance of today – and I just highlighted it all and hit Delete. It wasn’t doing justice to what today should mean to all of us.
I guess all I have to say is, Never Forget.
OMG! This is SO awesome!!! I can type up my journal from Europe now and put it in my diary. Thank you!!

This is a good feature. Thanks. Loving the note conversation as well. Thank you.
Warning Comment
Oo, I like this one too 🙂

YAY we can go back in time! You are now master of time and space as well! Bet that feels good! :o)
Warning Comment
Thank you!
Warning Comment
Yes, Yes, OMG YES! Thank you so much!
Warning Comment
Awesome! 🙂 I like the old date entry thing. I think I tried doing that awhile back with an entry but I ended up just deleting the entry. Keep up the good work, DM! ~*Samantha*~
Warning Comment
Yay! Thank you! 🙂
Warning Comment
OMG!!! I LOVE you for this!! **Happy dance**
Warning Comment
YAY!!! This is great to have that back! And Never Forget is more then enough.
Warning Comment
*happy dance* that is fantastic! i was hoping something like that would come along. thank you! 🙂
Warning Comment
NIce feature. One of these days, I hope you will take us on a photo tour of OD’s offices… maybe of the data center? 😀 That would be sweet. Never forget.
Warning Comment
OMG importing TOD would be frickin awesome!! haha, I DREAD to think what mine is like! xx
Warning Comment
I like the way things are going around here. Re: your sidebar. Yep. I said a couple sentences on Facebook and I felt it may have been too much.
Warning Comment
You kept that one secret! 😛 Awesome! 🙂
Warning Comment
Thankyou 🙂
Warning Comment
This is awesome!

Cool. Now do you think, that, you could ALSO add, among those changes…the format in which, you also used to have the colors in Diary Maintenance, back to the one’s with the names, listing the colors, and their names? ‘Cause, I really miss that old format of it! (I find it easier to use that way, and I like it that way!) Thanks.
Warning Comment
Thanks so much. I really missed that feature!! Great job!!
Warning Comment
we can go back in time now?! where did you find a flux capacitor? I’ve been looking for one those for years!!!
Warning Comment
Eeeeeee import! I’m so excited! ~
Warning Comment
Oh, thank goodness! I’ve been waiting forever to merge my old diary into this one so I can delete it! I should update it so it doesn’t get deleted in regular system maintenance. I can’t wait!
Warning Comment
THANK YOU. This is a great addition.
Warning Comment
Some years ago, I combined two diaries into one. At the time, I thought that all of the entries from the other diary got stuck in as new entries and so they were out of date order. I can’t seem to find them now to fix them. Could your new code have automatically put them in the right place?
Warning Comment
I seem to be able to do everything else at OD today, but when I try to save a new entry, I get kicked out into screen about not connecting, and suggesting there might be maintenance going on at the site.
Warning Comment
i love you bruce. thanks.
Warning Comment
Your as amazing as ever! :O)
Warning Comment
Yay, I can put old entries back on! 🙂 But how does that work with the diary entry numbers in the url?

hi- i am semi new to od. i have a question….why is it, when i am leaving a note, and i write the *f* word, it dosent savve my note and let me just go back and take out that word. its kind of annoying. i have written several note so my sister in law on here, and i have had to retype everything over. can you tell me how to just go back and erase the word and still have my note?? also, what does itmean -faves only- my diary is faves only, leave me a note and ill add you. thanks! kimberly:)
Warning Comment
thats awesome! I just wish it would have been around years ago when I imported all of my old entries (pre OD days) and I was being anal about wanting everything in the right order so I deleted a bunch of entries and resaved them in the right order. I lost a bunch of entries that way (mostly my fault, but I think also some of them were lost because of the Great Hack Attack). lol I love it anyway! Thanks!
Warning Comment
Woot! Now I can solve my problem of duplicate entries! Way back when I ported my diary to OD+ I accidently did it twice and it was quite the mess. But no more! I can clearly see which ones are duplicates!
Warning Comment
Sweet! I’m excited! 😀
Warning Comment
Great feature to the left and a great sentiment, to the right.
Warning Comment
Backdating entries?! YAY!
Warning Comment
Merging diaries?! Yes please!!
Warning Comment
This is a really useful tool. Thanks. Let me know when you can figure out who writes ugly stuff if a diarist decides to be public with their entries. 🙂

Warning Comment
I feel like Doctor Who.
Warning Comment
AWESOME!!! i always wondered why it didn’t go in order!
Warning Comment
that’s awesome!!! thanks heaps for bringing itback!! now off to play!!!
Warning Comment
oh thank god!! i am soooo happy youve done this
Warning Comment
I’m glad to see this come back. I’ve only ever done this a couple times since I’ve been here, but it’s good that if I need to, it’s now an option.
Warning Comment
This is just wonderful!! Thank you
Warning Comment
I wrote something to you similar to this on Facebook but it bares repeating. I used to have a TOD but switched over before the import feature was ever implemented so I just manually transferred all of my entries (and there were many). I was always bothered that they were never in chronological order (I think I’m borderline OCD) and now they will be!!! Thanks x 1,000,000!
Warning Comment
Great
Warning Comment
I’ve been hoping this feature would come into existence!! THANK YOU!
Warning Comment
Does this work for previously added backdated entries? Let’s say I added something for 2003 but I did it when the backdating wasn’t working… Will it be properly ordered now?
Warning Comment
Chances of you seeing this is probably a million to none with all the comments people leave. But do you think you could write an entry on your thoughts of the MDD crash. I too am a survivor. How many people have flooded your site since the crash? What are the chances of this site crashing? Is it owned by another site? overall…ARE WE SAFE?
Warning Comment
Well, thanks, I suppose. I have no clue what you’re talking about, but I trust you, so I assume this is an improvement.
Warning Comment
Awesome upgrade… I like it! 🙂
Warning Comment
Upgrades sound a lot better than having a site just disappear overnight……..thanks for your efforts here.
Warning Comment
YES YES YES YES YES I LOVE YOU THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! Didn’t I just leave a note about this? Haha. Anyway, I think I just scared my husband who was sitting next to me when I logged in and saw the news on the front page. I was very vocal in my appreciation 🙂 Yay, now all the entries I retyped after the hacker attack a few years ago (also on a 9/11 although I have no idea ifthat was meant to be a purposeful coincidence) actually appear in their right space. Re: the box…I don’t know what to say either 🙁 But I’m glad you marked it.
Warning Comment
Thank you, I’ve missed that.
Warning Comment
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been missing this feature for awhile. 🙂
Warning Comment
Thanks for the welcoming advice! I think we should be notified when someone leaves us a note, because I’m sure I’m gonna forget to check it 😛
Warning Comment
Is your site going under maintence? I can’t post any new entries!!!
Warning Comment
In the last hacker attack, the password for my second diary: http://www.opendiary.com/entrylist.asp?authorcode=A933709 was reset and I never received an update. I need help solving this problem. I’ve been trying to get in touch, but have received NO responses. I want this resolved so I can start using it Thank you. (Also sent two ‘help’ emails [& 2 notes] from two different email addys.)
Warning Comment
Oooh, great new feature. Appreciate all the work you do!
Warning Comment
Thanks so much for the message DiaryMaster, that was a nice unexpected surprise! I took your advice to embed, thanks, but for some reason it doesn’t work! I pasted it just like it told me… Feel free to post my OpenDiary video-style entry to the main page heh heh, I wouldn’t mind

I’m excited to see some features that I remember from WAY back (like 2000) when I had my original OD returning. Also as a person whom has entries saved from JournalCommunity I can’t wait for the import feature. I’m very excited and do hope my dial up can handle importing the entries when it’s available! 🙂
Warning Comment
Wow.
Warning Comment
Very nice!

I know you get a giant pile of comments, and please don’t think I’m complaining as I’m not….but I wondered if it would ever be possible to receive email notices of our friends’ notes and adding us to their bookmark lists? That was a real treat in our old diary…but please don’t think I’m complaining. I’m just sharing what was a great benefit to many….thanks for everything, Michael.

I downloaded my diary today and the entries still save in the order they were posted, not the natural date order. I don’t know if this is something you’d want to fix, just thought I would let you know. I personally would like it if they were save in date order rather than posted order.
Warning Comment
Thank you for this facility. I am an OD member to keep in touch with my daughter and son-in-law who met here. I use my diary more as a travel diary. So entries aren’t always written in sequence. Today i had almost finished an entry when i lost the internet connection. Thank you, thank you for the autosave function. Most of the entry was waiting for me when i logged back in.
Warning Comment
I’m just wondering how long an diary can go inactive before you will purge it? I still log into my old diary every once in awhile.. but don’t update it anymore. Thanks. 🙂
Warning Comment
HI, I don’t know if you remember .. there used to be a diary jointly run by a group of women who were following the Julia Cameron Book ‘an artist’s journey’ or somethign like that. They did weekly ‘art adventures .. I think one diarist was Mapgpie something, don’t remember the others .. do you know which diary I mean? This was in about 1999 – 2000??? If so, is it still extant?

Hey, I’m having some difficulty posting to circles. I select a circle at the bottom of my entry and then it doesn’t seem to be posting. What could the problem be?
Warning Comment
Excellent! Thank you, Master.

A very nice feature indeed!
