Three weeks and counting…

since we have interacted with other humans – except for a couple trips to drop things off at the in-laws (and talking to them from a safe distance) and seeing/talking to the friend that is still grocery shopping and has dropped some things off for us (and talking to her from a safe distance).

Going from commuting on a packed train and walking through Times Square every day, to this – is a big difference. I have to say, I don’t miss the commute, and I don’t much miss interacting with all the other people I did in my work – because I still see many of them every day on video calls (which is how I interacted with most of them before this anyway). I do very much like spending more time with DiaryMistress, that is a huge plus to a bad time.

The extra hours in my day have given me the opportunity to:

  • fix some things around the house that were lacking, with more to come
  • brush up my SQL skills again, and learn to write some new queries
  • read some things I hadn’t gotten to yet
  • start fixing some things in the yard that needed work
  • clean up my home office some, but there’s still a lot to go on that front 🙂

Trying not to watch too much news – not that it’s not important, but I’m finding this similar to 9/11 in that you could glue yourself to the news all day and you wouldn’t learn remarkably more than you would learn in a half hour.

We have Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, Britbox – lots of streaming opportunities. What we ended up watching last night? Little House on the Prairie. Which meant I had to do some Wikipedia reading, because among other things I wanted to know what the real age difference was between Almonso and Laura (six years in the books, but ten years in real life and on TV).

One thing I learned that I didn’t know – at the end of the show, in the farewell made-for-TV movie, they blew up all of the sets that were the town of Walnut GroveSHEESH. Guess they really, really didn’t want to revisit that show again.

Quick googling turned up the below video, which is set to the best of all the Beastie Boys’ songs:

The soundtrack makes this video 100x better. Actually, having now watched it all the way through – it’s a compilation of all the violent happenings on Little House, not just blowing up the town. Believe me, if you want to read more about Little House (like anything else) there is plenty to find on the internet.

Speaking of reading (which I was above) I’m currently on this:

(and NO I’m not posting some kind of affiliate link that makes me money if you buy that book – I just wanted to see how Open Diary would display an Amazon link if I posted one)

It’s a very good book so far – if you like historical non-fiction as I do – all about the Dutch colony in Manhattan, before the British took over. I’ve always been fascinated with NYC history, and this one being about the Dutch is even better – in my ancestry that I have great-grandparents who were Van Cortlandts, and owned much of the land in New York City and Westchester back in the day. Not that they left any to me! But funny story, a couple centuries later, I was born in a hospital that stands on the ground that was at one time part of Van Cortlandt’s manor and farms.

If you had asked me a month ago if I was quarantined for several weeks I would have said that would give me time to:

  • learn Italian
  • work on my programming skills and learn a new Javascript framework
  • try my hand at drawing
  • build the P-51 Mustang kit model that’s been sitting on a shelf for two years
  • call my friends and family and talk to them more
  • take our dogs for long walks (okay there’s been a couple of those)
  • teach myself accordion and re-learn guitar

So far, not so much 😄

Hope you are all staying safe and healthy!

I heard Michael Landon was a horrible person and he treated his real family really horrible especially his wife.  But he was an awesome actor.  I use to watch this show when it was first on….I was so sad when it stopped.

Sounds like you are keeping yourself busy….I know the dog walks help.

April 3, 2020

@jaythesmartone I read that too, it’s too bad you never really know people by what you see on the screen!

April 2, 2020

Glad you’re staying safe. We also have a lot of streaming channels here. 🙂 “the news” are a relative term, now that everything is opinion pretending to be news (been like this for a while, and this is coming from someone with a journalism degree). I find that shutting those off, and limiting my time on Facebook (unfollowing people who post stuff that annoys me) has been good for my soul, and therefore has allowed me to be a better human in this world. Haha.

Every day I saw I’m gonna clean my place, and end up watching TV after work. Thankfully, both my husband and I are still working, both from home, so there’s that. I also wish I was writing a book right now, but the mind is messy.

Anyway, take care and stay safe. 🙂

*every day I say

April 3, 2020

@free_spirit_gal “writing a book” is another one that’s on my aspirational list 🙂

April 2, 2020

It is isolating.. I’m glad you seem to be handling it well.

April 3, 2020

@thelastdruid it is that. I worry about people who live alone and are used to getting their human interaction when they go out of the house – I think it must be very hard for people like that.

I remember Van Cortlandt Manor. We took a field trip to it in elementary school. The book sounds very interesting.

April 3, 2020

@gypsywynd yes, last time we were there visiting there was an elementary school field trip there! Seems like it’s a popular spot for that.

I rally loved Little House!,,   I also loved The Walton’s.

I see you are very productive and glad you and Diary Mistress get more quality time!

I feel stir crazy sometimes, but I take a walk or clean something. From 7 pm. On, I call my me time and relax with streaming things, or play onmy IPad. I do daily devotions and quie time every day, as well. I pray this goes away soon, and I pray a safe covering, from God over everyone!

April 3, 2020

@butterfly4him  I’m not so sure, I don’t feel super productive 🙂 I’m glad that you are doing well!

April 5, 2020

@thediarymaster Thank you very much!!!! 🙂

April 2, 2020

I’m not sure what stuff you’ve not got on Britbox that we have (for example, I believe that classic Doctor Who is UK only as is all the Channel 4 stuff) or I’d be making a load of recommendations to you right now

April 3, 2020

@williamthebloody there’s a lot – and I’m sure a great deal of it would really like, we just need to dive into it. We started with it so we could have some of the oldies shows like Vicar of Dibley, Keeping Up Appearances, Fawlty Towers, etc. that don’t get carried very well here in US.

I have unfortunately never embraced Doctor Who – I probably would love it, and I probably should – just haven’t tried it yet. It’s one of those things where there is so much storyline out there, and it is such a highly-evolved universe, that it feels like almost too much to just jump into.

April 3, 2020

@thediarymaster Best thing to do to start Doctor Who is ignore the classic series for now.  Start with either Rose, the first episode of the revival, or The Eleventh Hour, the first episode of series 5.  The latter may sound daft, but it’s the first episode of the Moffatt era and is designed as a jumping on point

April 3, 2020

I am kin to Laura Ingalls Wilder. She’s a great aunt I think. I’d have to look at my tree. She’s on my father’s Mother’s side.

April 3, 2020

@snarkle that’s very cool!

April 3, 2020

@thediarymaster it is and it connects me to FDR! And Hoover! Blink! genealogy is fun stuff

April 3, 2020

@snarkle wow! I do genealogy a lot too, and have learned a lot about my family – but I don’t have any presidential connections that I know of 🙂

April 3, 2020

@thediarymaster LOL I have royal connections too! It’s surprising

April 3, 2020

@thediarymaster My cousin (we met via ancestry.com’s DNA test) is a genealogist. She has given me over 2K ancestors. I’m a distant cousin to HRH Elizabeth II… like it makes any difference but LOL pretty cool

April 4, 2020

@snarkle we should have tea with the Royal family sometime then 🙂

April 4, 2020

@thediarymaster Oh indeed we must do that. Do you have your formal attire prepared? I have my hat and my white gloves. LOL

April 6, 2020

@snarkle I will have to find my top hat, I don’t remember where I left it HA

April 6, 2020

@thediarymaster well tut tut get a move on young man!
