Criticize Me…then spank me, k?
So here’s my intro to my porn paper…surely subject to change. People always say to write an intro last. Don’t do it, be badass like me and do it first. Live on the edge of academia, yo.
Anyway..
The philosophical debate about whether or not, and to what extent, pornography should be censored has raged for as long as pornography has been around. While pro-censorship advocates argue from multiple viewpoints, there are three pro-censorship arguments that are more visible than others: the feminist, the religious, and the political argument. Perhaps these groups have arguments that overlap with each other, but they ultimately have their own talking points when they advocate censoring a person’s right to free speech and expression. For example, the feminist argument is that pornography can only objectify women and therefore should be banned, while those members of the religious right argue that pornography, or any sexually explicit image, is immoral and sinful. The political case is somewhat different in that it shifts as the views of a politicians constituents shifts, but it generally argues that viewing any pornographic material – violent or not – results in that person becoming a higher risk of committing a sexually violent crime. Thus, pornography is a danger to the public good and should be banned. All of these arguments differ greatly and have been defended passionately over the years, but what every one of these arguments has in common is that they are easily disproved. Pornography is simply the graphic depiction of two consenting adults having sex, a most natural act, for the sole purpose of sexually stimulating the viewer, and because one may not agree with that is no reason to deny another the right to free speech or expression.

(BTW, I do get that there is porn that is violent and hella degrading. I’d be in favor of banning that, but my focus is on mainstream-jenna jameson-big budget porn)

hmm…maybe a less general statement for your intro sentence? maybe state something that this paper is geared towards the mainstream jenna jameson type porn and the arguements against this? that way you dont have to worry about those arguments against violent/degrading porn cuz you cut them out of the pic right away? i dunno…that’s just my opinion š can i read the paper when you are done?

I’d go into less specifics in the intro. Maybe something in reference to the wide spectrum of porn, and play that off into the wide spectrum of arguments held by the anti-porn faction? Also, I think a few of the those anti-pornites might argue that there is no such thing as a “sole purpose” to porn, and that the repression of women, subverting of the innocent, etc. are alternate purposes. I hate writing essays. Good luck.
