RYN: Well, that’s the English language for you. To us, a bum is a dirty nobody who won’t support themselves, and spunk means a combo of energy, enthusiasm, and aggression, not the other thing… Plus some Yiddish has entered US slang: schmuck and schlong, among others, plus local insults/slang so you get things like: Goat-roper, needle-dick, and dick-weed. Tower of Babel, anybody?
